Blaine Reininger and Steven Brown are the creative mainsprings behind cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As well as collaborating on several film and stage soundtracks, the pair have also regularly performed live as a piano/sax/violin duo since 1984. This CD captures (with crystal clear sound) one of their best recitals, at the Teatro Sao Luis in Lisbon, Portugal, on 21 November 1989. Highlights include Iberia and Arrivee Dans Le Jour, Ghost Sonata extracts such as The Fall and Licorice Stick Ostinato, and Tuxedomoon classics Volo Vivace and Litebulb Overkill - the first ever song written by Reininger and Brown. Long unavailable, Live In Lisbon has now been digitally remastered with two extra tracks and features extensive sleevenotes, and new artwork.
As well as representing two-thirds of the acclaimed avant garde act Tuxedomoon, Steven Brown and Blaine Reininger have delivered a number of live performances together as a violin and piano duo. The 'Live In Lisbon' CD records the double act in 1989. Beautifully remastered, the studio quality of this recording of modern classical music is a document of the partnership at its peak. The opening 'Iberia' is a mournful piece rivalling Ravel's 'Bolero' for swooning grace, Reininger's solo piano compositions drip with an elegiac quality and 'L'Arrivee Dans Le Jour' is a piece of pastoral loveliness. Brown and Reininger could sometimes be an inconsistent act; often substituting experimentalism in favour of emotion and melody but this is a definite exception to that view.
Reininger would team up with Steven Brown for the 1890-1990: One Hundred Years Of Music live set, recorded in Portugal, and put out in March 1990. Recorded Live in Portugal Teatro Sao~ Luis Nov. 21 1989. Sound: Stefan Kraemer. Music: Reininger - Brown
