In the early 1960s Goffredo Petrassi’s idiom was almost indistinguishable from that of the Italian avant-garde. Completed in 1964, the Seventh Concerto evolves with mounting tension and a sense of underlying menace. The Eighth Concerto from 1972 was commissioned and premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It is a substantial piece of outright virtuosity, with dissonance, trenchant dialogues and a fraught atmosphere. The much earlier Sonata da camera for harpsichord and ten instruments finds Petrassi poised between neo-Classicism and a more modernist direction.

On their last recording for Lawo Classics, the Oslo Philharmonic under the baton of Vasily Petrenko were described by The Guardian as 'an orchestra in fine form, with classy wind soloists and big-toned strings', so it was only natural that they should join forces again in this new recording of Prokofiev's 7th Symphony coupled with Myaskovsky's Sinfonietta, Op. 68 No. 2.

Laurie Anderson is an American experimental performance artist and musician. Anderson - violinist, composer, singer, sculptor, poet, and leader in the use of multimedia in the arts - is renowned as one of the most eclectic and groundbreaking performers in the world. The space agency chose Anderson as its artist in residence for 2003. Musically, she has collaborated with Brian Eno, Lou Reed, and Peter Gabriel. Her two most popular albums are "Strange Angels" and "Big Science."
After briefly entering the mainstream pop radar in 1981 with her lone hit "O Superman," Laurie Anderson enjoyed a public visibility greater than virtually any other avant-garde figure of her era. Her infrequent forays into rock aside, Anderson nevertheless remained firmly grounded within the realm of performance art, her ambitious multimedia projects encompassing not only music but also film, mime, visual projections, dance, and – most importantly – spoken and written language, the cornerstone of all of her work.

These are two of Donovan's best albums of the 70s. I consider them both better than either Cosmic Wheels or Essence to Essence. Maybe not as great as Open Road, but the styles are so different its hard to compare. 7-Tease is full of high energy songs as well as a couple of slower ballads…

This is an absolutely brilliant take on Elgar and just because it's not the same as all the other boring interpretations on disc doesn't mean it doesn't have significant value… This is an incredible record. Bernstein's speeds are thoroughly considered and, in my view, extremely authentic (whatever that word means). Before listening to this I found much of Elgar's music troublesome. Bernstein makes this a truly convincing performance of sincerity and passion.

…The performances, sung without a chorus but played with a string complement numbering 4-4-2-2-1, are, if not overwhelming, entirely convincing. The four soloists manage their roles admirably, and the recorded sound is excellent. (…) Incidentally, buried in the notes is an eye-popping statement that Montréal Baroque “has undertaken Bach’s complete cantatas in a pared-down version, with a one-per-part choir, as was the practice in Lutheran Germany of the time.” That would be a first, since all of the other complete and on-going series employ small choirs. There was no mention of boy sopranos.

…Because Janowski and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande have had great successes with this and the last two Bruckner symphonies, listeners in search of great performances should give them a try, and audiophiles should regard them as required listening.
