Although ‘Quit the Curse’ is Anna Burch’s debut album, the Detroit-based singer/songwriter has already established her talent by cutting her teeth playing with Frontier Ruckus and Failed Flowers. Now signed to Polyvinyl in the States and Heavenly in the UK, many more people are going to be left spellbound by the combination of angst-ridden confessions, slyly dark humour and gorgeous pop hooks on these nine songs.

The smooth-jazz acoustic-guitar star gets his R&B groove on throughout many tracks on this beautifully recorded disc, and not just on the obvious tunes like the sneaky Isley Brothers cover, "Who's That Lady" (with Kirk Whalum cooking on sax), and the old Temptations number, "Just My Imagination," but also on the very funky "Turn It Out," with sax man Euge Groove, and the Latin-tinged "Bueno Funk," with Steve Cole on the horn. The rest of the album is about as dependable and complete an album White has put together since the promise he showed with Basia in the mid-'80s, which is to say smooth-jazz radio and fans are sure to be all over his thoughtful melodies and tasteful arrangements. Other guest stars include trumpeter Rick Braun, the ubiquitous keyboardist Jeff Lorber, and saxophonist Dave Koz, who warms the title ballad. More tracks sure to please fans of the very popular guitarist include "Pedro Blanco," and "Baby Steps."

Mainhorse signed originally to Polydor Records in 1970 and released their self-titled debut in 1971. Along with Patrick Moraz the other musician of note was Bryson Graham who would go on to play with Gary Wright in Wonderwheel and then join Wright in a re formed Spooky Tooth in 1972. The album has been re mastered personally by Patrick Moraz for this release.

A little gem. I was looking for Lessel's concerto for about 2 years. Finally I got it this year. I heard it first on the radio (thanks Margaret Throsby, ABC Classic FM) and loved it. Franciszek Lessel, pupil of Haydn, is just magnificent. On this CD you get to hear his Piano Concerto in C major Op.14. Wonderful Adagio and lively Rondo Allegretto, very much in the Classical style. Also, Dobrzynski (friend of Chopin, they studied together) delivers a most beautiful Concerto. Piano Concerto- early Romantic Style, beautiful slow movement Andante espressivo. I lament the fact that these concerti are so obscure and forgotten. What a shame! Give yourself a break and try something new, you may be pleasantly surprised!
