In a world sometimes tired of contemplating its own treasures, a plethora of discography with immediate and commonplace access can make the release of a new recording dedicated to some of Beethoven's 32 sonatas surprising. More particularly, the choice made by an artist such as Philippe Entremont, after 70 years of a phenomenal career, to focus on one of the Viennese Master's most recorded parts, reflects the complexity and intensity governing the relationship between the performer and the work, the relationship between his instrument and the orchestral aspects of the writing.

There are projects on which the artistic director of a record label straightaway asks himself a few questions. For example, when it comes to recording Beethoven’s three ‘greatest hit’ sonatas, recorded a multitude of times by the leading pianists. However, a forte-pianist of the calibre of Alexei Lubimov already constitutes one good reason to implement the project, as does the choice of the facsimile of an Erard piano (1802, copy made by Christopher Clarke) of which the original was within Beethoven’s reach.

Beethoven’s music for solo piano contains some of his most visionary, groundbreaking and memorable works. Drawn from the Complete Edition boxed set (Naxos 8.500250), the selected movements from Beethoven’s most well-known piano sonatas illustrate his dynamism as a composer and pianist, as well as his gift for flowing melodic beauty, with a wide range of variation and emotion. The smaller pieces highlight the composer’s command of variation form and, in the case of the Rondo a capriccio in G major (‘Rage over a Lost Penny'), his scintillating powers of bravura wit.

Daniel Barenboim's performances of these three sonatas are quite simply flawless. Each movement of each sonata is played exactly as it it should be, both technically and artistically. I cannot imagine more intellectually and emotionally satisfying performances of these works. If you have come to regard these sonatas as over-played "warhorses" listen to this CD and enjoy them as the masterpieces which they truly are.

Pianist Rudolf Buchbinder is an important specialist in core Austro-Germanic repertory, bringing precision and taste to music from Haydn to Brahms. He was a pioneering champion of Haydn's keyboard music, recording that composer's complete piano sonatas in the 1970s. Buchbinder was born in Litomerice, Czechoslovakia, on December 1, 1946, as the region's ethnically German inhabitants were being expelled by order of the Czech government. He grew up in Austria and attended the Vienna Academy of Music, where he studied with Bruno Seidlhofer. Something of a prodigy, Buchbinder took a piano trio prize at the Munich International Festival in 1961 and earned a Dinu Lipatti Medal the following year.
