Imagined as a concert that Bach could have instigated, this disc explores the Cantor ‘s art of transcription and reveals the wealth of influences which the Germanic empire was exposed to in the first half of the eighteenth century. Going back and forth between fantasy and counterpoint, between German and Italian styles, Bach makes these forms and styles his own and thus plays with the rich sound pallets of the viola da gamba and the harpsichord. This album is the first recorded by two rising stars whose tremendous energy and complicity has conferred greater depth to this concert.

On "Wanderlust," the new album on Berlin Classics, the Boulanger Trio explores romantic worlds of feeling, transports listeners to a wide variety of soundscapes, and takes hold of the musical walking stick. With a program that explores through different national schools of composition, they not only combine the great names of the 19th century on one album, but deliver an intelligently assembled soundtrack for a road trip. Founded in Hamburg in 2006 by Karla Haltenwanger (piano), Birgit Erz (violin) and Ilona Kindt (violoncello), the trio is now based in Berlin and Hamburg. In 2007 the ensemble won the 4th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in Norway, followed by the Rauhe Prize for Modern Chamber Music in 2008. The ensemble has received musical guidance from Hatto Beyerle, Menahem Pressler and Alfred Brendel.

Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger (1824-88) was a French figure painter. He was born at Paris, studied with Delaroche and Jollivet, and in 1849 took the Prix de Rome. All his paintings show a refined taste and imagination, but are cold and academic in execution. They include a "Moorish Cafe" (1848), "Cæsar at the Rubicon" (1865), the "Promenade in the Street of Tombs, Pompeii" (1869), and The Slave Market (1888). The recipient of many medals, he became a member of the Institute in 1882.

Destined to be musicians? The female composers to whom Baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonneche pays tribute enjoyed very different fates: while the name Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) continued to be remembered, who knows Mlle Duval (born around 1718), the second woman to have a work presented at the Paris Opera and nicknamed 'la Legende' in her time? Her opera-ballet, Les Genies, remains a testament to her great mastery. Then there were Anne-Madeleine Guesdon de Presles and Elisabeth-Louise Pellecier, composers married to composers - the latter signed her works with the name of her husband, Papavoine… Others found it easier to achieve the limelight because they were aristocrats, like Mlle de Menetou (1679-1745). No fewer than ten female composers are brought back to life in this programme of sonatas, overtures and dances devised by Sophie de Bardonneche, a founder member of Le Consort, who is accompanied on her first solo album by her partners Lucile Boulanger and Justin Taylor.
