In some ways, it's easy to think of A Night on the Town, Rod Stewart's second album for Warner, as a reprisal of the first, cut with many of the same musicians as Atlantic Crossing, produced once again by Tom Dowd, and even following its predecessor's conceit of having a "Slow Side" and "Fast Side" (granted, this flips the two around, opening with the slow one first)…

Digitally remastered edition of this 1971 album from the British singer/songwriter. The album was an expression of his life and views at the time, innocence and complexity born of 60's idealism. The recording was made at Olympic Studios, coproduced by Vic Smith, and with performances by Chris Spedding, Madeline Bell, Doris Troy, Onnie McIntyre and Alan Gorrie (of AWB), Andy Roberts and Ray Russell. Korda's style is somewhere between contemporaries Labi Siffre and Cat Stevens. RPM.

This excellent solo piano album (also released, in fact, as The Piano Album) was recorded at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California in 1994. It's a wide-ranging survey of Wakeman's career, featuring new instrumental versions of songs Wakeman recorded with Yes, ABWH, and the Strawbs; songs he recorded as a sideman with David Bowie ("Space Oddity" and "Life On Mars") and Cat Stevens ("Morning Has Broken"); and solo material both classic and recent, including a definitive version of "Gone But Not Forgotten." Wakeman is in great form throughout, and this is one of his most enjoyable releases.

One of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock & roll, Kim Fowley was, over the course of his decades-long career, a true jack-of-all-trades: singer, songwriter, producer, manager, disc jockey, promoter, and published poet. He was also the catalyst behind much of the pop music to emerge from the Los Angeles area during the 1960s and '70s, guiding several of his associates and protégés to fame and fortune, while remaining himself a shadowy cult figure well outside the margins of the mainstream…

The original soundtrack to the civil rights/football drama Remember the Titans features classic rock, pop, and soul hits like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," and Buck Owens' "Act Naturally." Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself," Eric Burdon & War's "Spill the Wine," and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend" are some of the other high points from this rousing collection, which complements the film's tale of a recently integrated high school football team in the early '70s.

Surrounded by Time is Tom Jones' 42nd album, his first since the passing of wife Linda in 2016. Since 1965, the Welsh vocalist, possessed of a singular booming baritone, has sung almost every form of popular music of all stripes. This is Jones' fourth album with producer Ethan Johns, and includes his manager/son Mark Woodward as co-producer. Surrounded by Time differs from Jones' previous outings with Johns, which were rooted in Americana sources. The set opens with a sparsely orchestrated reinvention of Bernice Johnson Reagon's activist classic "I Won't Crumble with You If You Fall." Jones performs the lyric like a gospel preacher atop Neil Cowley's and Johns' layered Moogs, Nick Pini's arco bass, and Dan See's mallets.

A Night on the Town is Rod Stewart's seventh album, released in 1976. On 30 June 2009, Rhino reissued the album as a two-disc CD with bonus tracks. Stewart performed "Big Bayou" regularly with The Faces during their final US tour the previous year, although that version was based on the one Ronnie Wood released on his solo album, Now Look. A Night on the Town was Stewart's last UK number-one album until Time in 2013.

Sheryl Crow was one of the key artists of the '90s, if the yardstick is capturing the sound and spirit of the time. A former backing vocalist for Michael Jackson – an association that led to dubious tabloid headlines romantically linking her with the singer long before she was a star in her own right – she rode the first great wave of Women in Rock hysteria of the alt-rock explosion to fame with her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club, in 1994, settling into the weary aftermath of the post-grunge years with her brilliant eponymous second album in 1996, riding out the end years of the Clinton administration with the measured, mature Globe Sessions in 1998, and then defying the gloom of the W years by soaking up the sun on 2002's C'mon C'mon.
