Mehta was twenty-six when he became conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and he stayed for seventeen years, growing into a major conductor. These performances were recorded in 1977 in concert at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Mehta left the following year to take over the New York Philharmonic. Kirk Browning of Live from Lincoln Center was the producer and RCA veteran Max Wilcox was the sound engineer and their work is first-rate. (…) The orchestra plays superbly and Mehta is at his charismatic best. He could pass for either a Hollywood or a Bollywood film star playing a great conductor. Fortunately, he was also a great musician.

In 1961 Ella Fitzgerald recorded two albums with Nelson Riddle's Orchestra. Her voice was in peak form and, even if the backup band was somewhat anonymous, Fitzgerald uplifted the 15 songs on this set; "All of Me" was from a different obscure sampler and "Call Me Darling" was previously unissued. Although the accent is on ballads, several of the songs are taken at medium tempos and she swings throughout. Highlights include "Georgia on My Mind," "The Very Thought of You," "It's a Pity to Say Goodnight," "Darn That Dream," "Body and Soul" and a cooking "All of Me."

Donatoni makes a speciality of chamber pieces in which the players pursue and provoke each other. The sparks invariably fly, but they don't always illuminate larger perspectives. Etwas ruhiger im Ausdruck is the earliest work included. As the title leads one to expect, it's more restrained than the rest, though characteristic of all five pieces to the extent that fragmented, fugitive activity takes place within clearly defined limits. Even this is not young man's music—Donatoni was born in 1927—but it's subtle and fascinating in its inventive way with soft sonontles.
