“Whoosh!” sees Deep Purple for the third time joining forces with producer Bob Ezrin, who invited the band to Nashville to write and record new songs. Together they created the most versatile album in their collaboration. Deep Purple “stretched out in all directions” without any limitation, letting their creativity go. “Deep Purple is putting the Deep back into Purple” was the half-joking motto in the studio after the first songs made it clear that Ezrin and Purple were on their path to creating an album pushing the boundaries of time, while voicing their resentment about the current situation of the world and addressing all generations.

Almost from the start of their career, Deep Purple played sessions for the newly formed Radio 1, where they were championed by DJs such as John Peel, Tommy Vance and Pete Drummond, late night and weekend jocks who would feature underground music from the UK and overseas. Disc One here contains a number of sessions Purple recorded for the BBC between 1968 and 1970, during this era. Between ’70 and ’72, the band released three of their most renowned and heavy albums, Deep Purple In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head, all of which were huge successes in both the UK, and in the USA where they had now attracted a major following. On March 9th 1972 however, they were back in London, recording a final concert for Radio 1, at the Paris Theatre which was subsequently broadcast on the station, and now features in its entirety on the second disc of this new 2CD collection.

Dead End are an influential Japanese heavy metal band that were formed in Tokyo in 1984. They have been considered one of the leaders of "Visual Kei," a style and sound many Japanese hard rock and heavy metal bands have been categorized for, although some say that Visual Kei is merely a term used to describe the artists' look and not their sound, the subject of much dispute. In Dead End's case, Visual Kei would seem to mean big hair, lots of leather, flashy clothes and blaring guitars. They have been said to have influenced many artists, the most famous probably being L'Arc-En-Ciel frontman Hyde.

Richard Danielson and Clas Gustavsson (then mainly a drummer) met in 1984 as members of a touring blues band called “Diving Duck”. A little fed up with the cover-mentality of the ordinary blues band-concept they started to play acoustic on late hotel nights after the gigs to get the music out of their system. There they founded a form of blues rooted in the early pre-war blues, with no bas and drums, but with a modern rock attitude. In 1988 they started to play and make gigs under the name of Baba Blues duo and decided to make a tape to sell after the gigs.

Performing the eclectic compositions of world-jazz bassist Jason Everett, this group of Indian, Prog Rock, and Classical musicians take the listener on a journey of exotic soundscapes. Jason’s ability to weave Indian-style melodies together with complex, funky, odd-meter grooves is deceptively natural.
