Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that their pop-funk – described by the group as the Sex Pistols-meet-Chic – would never have made them international pop stars…

This auspicious recording started out almost as an afterthought. Jimmy Smith was in the midst of making his excellent big-band album ANY NUMBER CAN WIN when he stepped into a couple of New York studios with old pal Kenny Burrell and a rhythm section to quickly cut the sides that became BLUE BASH. The air of spontaneity is certainly present here, as Burrell and Smith use the common language of the blues to move through a varied program.

The debut album by Mattafix is a pleasantly tantalizing experience of guessing the sound and never being quite there – because Mattafix has taken the old elements and made them into something new, or at least untried before. You can guess a trip-hop vibe – more like Morcheeba than Portishead, – a very tuned-down pub room groove of Morphine, a lot of hip-hop elements. (…) Quite possibly, this may be the album we really need after a hard day's night.

Caméléon is the fourth album by French singer Shy'm, released on 25 June 2012 on Warner Music France. Most of the material was written by Louis Côté and Cyril Kamar (also known as K.Maro), with some contributions from Tiery-F ("On se fout de nous" and "En plein cœur") and by soFLY & Nius ("Sur la route"). The album expanded on the pop sound of previous album, Prendre l'air, largely abandoning the R&B sound that Shy'm had previously developed. Songs like "Et alors !" were Shy'm's first experiments with the dance genre.

While the Norwegian jazz scene has been pursuing its own course for decades, the period of 1996-1997 represented a significant watershed, a milestone where an entirely new kind of music emerged, linked to jazz but distanced considerably—some might say completely, but they'd be mistaken—from its roots in the American tradition. Three seminal and groundbreaking albums were released within a year of each other: trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær's Khmer (ECM, 1997); noise improv group Supersilent's 1- 3 (Rune Grammofon, 1997); and, beating the others by a year, keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft's aptly titled New Conception of Jazz (Jazzland, 1996). All three explored the integration of electronics, disparate cultural references, programming, turntables and—especially in the case of Supersilent, the most avant-garde of the three— noise, to create aural landscapes that were innovative, otherworldly and refreshingly new.

When Simple Minds released Black and White in 2005, it was obvious they'd been doing some creative soul searching in light of the success of bands clearly influenced by them, namely, the Killers and Manic Street Preachers. 2009's Graffiti Soul saw the return of drummer Mel Gaynor to the fold. He brought a familiar, tight, propulsive foundation to Charlie Burchill's guitar playing and Andy Gillespie's imaginative synths. Jim Kerr's alternately whispering and soaring vocals were still at the fore, but were showcased inside more economical songwriting, and Jez Coad's production celebrated the band's pop identity. Big Music finds Simple Minds coming full circle – going all the way back to 1979 for inspiration. They've rediscovered the urgent, keyboard-driven post-punk futurism of recordings such as Empires and Dance and Sons and Fascination.

A musician of nearly legendary prowess, Jan Akkerman for a time eclipsed Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck among reader polls in England as the top guitarist in the world. Akkerman was born in Amsterdam, Holland, and showed his musical inclinations early, taking up the guitar while still in grade school. His taste and interests were extraordinarily wide-ranging, from pop/rock to classical, with room for blues, Latin, and other influences.

Greatest-hits compilations usually signal the end of a band, and Ministry appears to be no different. Tapes of Wrath taps into the rise and demise of this innovative and aggressive Chicago horde: from early aggro ("Over the Shoulder," "Flashback") to the top of the slag heap ("Burning Inside," "Jesus Built My Hotrod") into eclectic obscurity ("Lay Lady Lay," "Bad Blood"). Like most music video sets, Tapes doesn't exploit the extended DVD format, as many more hours of anything could be squeezed on…
