"Vision" portrays canonically overlaid sax parts played at breakneck speed before moving into a relaxed bluesy groove, then turns to blistering multi-horn solos. The dirge-like For Dolphy, with the plaintive vocal cries of the altos, was dedicated to the great alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy. The med swing and skewed bluesy feel of For H.G. features the tenor out front. Tryptichon is a challenging angular composition in 3 parts with free improvisation moving from slow to up-tempo and back. With its Dolphyesque melody, Music For Jule is a frenetic excursion with an oblique reference to Monk.

The epitome of class and elegance, though not stuffy, Ron Carter has been a world class bassist and cellist since the '60s. He's among the greatest accompanists of all time, but has also done many albums exhibiting his prodigious technique. He's a brilliant rhythmic and melodic player, who uses everything in the bass and cello arsenal; walking lines, thick, full, prominent notes and tones, drones and strumming effects, and melody snippets. His bowed solos are almost as impressive as those done with his fingers. Carter has been featured in clothing, instrument, and pipe advertisements; he's close to being the bass equivalent of a Duke Ellington in his mix of musical and extra-musical interests. Carter's nearly as accomplished in classical music as jazz, and has performed with symphony orchestras all over the world…

"Destination… Out!" is one of saxophonist Jackie McLean's best album, full of complexity that demonstrates the his ability as a writer, arranger, and instrumentalist. Together with its predecessor, "One Step Beyond", this 1963 session is considered one of Jackie McLean's best, to a great extent due to the stellar quintet members joining him. Trombonist Grachan Moncur III and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson both played on "One Step Beyond", their musical chemistry with McLean so strong he invited them back for this album. The quintet is rounded out by Larry Ridley on bass and drummer Roy Haynes. Moncur III also contributes three out of the four songs here while McLean wrote the fourth, "Kahlil The Prophet".

This edition presents the complete original Chico Hamilton LP Drumfusion (Columbia CS8607), appearing here on CD for the first time ever. Also included is the only known alternate take from the session, which was only previously issued on a long out of print compilation LP. To complete this CD, Hamilton’s following album, Passin’ Thru (Impulse AS-29) had been added. It had never been released before in its entirety on a single CD and includes a second version of “Transfusion”. Both LPs feature nearly the same personnel, with Garnett Brown and George Bohanon alternating on trombone.

unity, by byron & gerald, is a long lost & highly sought-after private press free jazz album recorded in 1969 at howard university. encouraged by his friend joe mcphee (who contributed an 'invocation' to the back cover), byron morris made unity the very first release on his own EPI label (EPI-01, 1972). it is the only hardcore free jazz record out of 1960s DC, & a viscerally powerful musical & cultural dispatch on the aesthetic & sociopolitical upheavals of its time.

Pithecanthropus Erectus was Charles Mingus' breakthrough as a leader, the album where he established himself as a composer of boundless imagination and a fresh new voice that, despite his ambitiously modern concepts, was firmly grounded in jazz tradition. Mingus truly discovered himself after mastering the vocabularies of bop and swing, and with Pithecanthropus Erectus he began seeking new ways to increase the evocative power of the art form and challenge his musicians (who here include altoist Jackie McLean and pianist Mal Waldron) to work outside of convention.

Like Eric Dolphy before him, Jackie McLean sought to create a kind of vanguard "chamber jazz" that still had the blues feel and – occasionally – the groove of hard bop, though with rounded, moodier edges. Destination Out! was the album on which he found it. Still working with Grachan Moncur III and Bobby Hutcherson – his direct spiritual connection to Dolphy – McLean changed his rhythm section by employing drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Larry Ridley. This combination proved a perfect balance of the four elements. The program is four tunes, three of which were written by Moncur.
