Exile on Main Street

First off, forget everything you thought you knew about Wilco. Forget the cheery country rock tunes like "Casino Queen" and "Box Full of Letters" you loved so much on their debut, "A.M.". But most of all, forget for the seventy-three minutes it will take you to get through this double-shot that Tweedy was in a band called Uncle Tupelo, because, apparently, he has. If "A.M." was Wilco's "Hard Day's Night", about what you'd expect considering the track record, then "Being There" is their "Revolver", chock full of unexpected sounds and styles, giddily tossing right and left hairpin turns at an audience who will likely not know what hit them.

More real Danish dynamite on request by people who already were happy to download 'In The Plain'. Anisette still sings like a witchy mix of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Kate Bush. The psychedelic rock is still haunting and enchanting, this was underground in the Swinging Sixties.

In September 1973 a unique and mystical patch of Southern California was the site of a heroin overdose, a corpse-napping and a subsequent well-intended, but badly botched, cremation. The deceased was alt-country patron saint/ex-Byrd and Burrito Brother/friend of Keith Richards: Gram Parsons. Just as the Rolling Stones were initially inspired by the likes of Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Solomon Burke, there would be a period in the early 1970’s where Parsons would occupy Keith’s attention and briefly influence the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.

Lots can happen in 22 years. Babies grow up, graduate college, start families. The onset of maturity is typically harder on rock bands. In 1972, the Stones released Exile on Main Street; by 1994, they were slumming in Voodoo Lounge. So it comes as a terrific surprise that Boston punk experimentalists Mission of Burma, who split shortly after 1982's Vs., sound as cutting edge as ever on this reunion disc. Opener "The Setup" features a midsection that sounds more like a jar of buzzing bees than any conventional solo, thanks to tape manipulator Bob Weston (borrowed from Shellac) putting guitarist Roger Miller through a barrage of effects. On a quieter note, the seductive "Falling" features backing vocals by Tonya Donnelly, while somber strings underscore "Prepared." Through it all, Burma still boast unerring melodic sensibilities; "The Enthusiast" and "Wounded World" are rife with sharp hooks. ONoffON was a long time coming, but well worth the wait.
