Forever In Vein

Collection includes 15 releases. Gregorian is a German band headed by Frank Peterson that performs gregorian chant-inspired versions of modern pop and rock songs. The band features both vocal harmony and instrumental accompaniment.

In the early years of Los Angeles punk, one of the premiere hardcore bands was T.S.O.L., which stood for True Sounds of Liberty. Offering poppier music than many of their contemporaries and featuring an image that appealed to punks who wanted to dive deeper into the gothic subgenre already being offered by many British punk bands, T.S.O.L. became hugely popular on the local scene but never translated that success to national exposure because of their ever-shifting lineup and sound.

A few years back, when this current, third-wave of Production Library revivalism began to take root, I was surprised to see such a fuss being made over Giombini's "Astromusic Synthesizer" (a later, early 80s Forever library much in the vein of Mort Garson & Paul Beaver's "Zodiac;" in the same way as Goblin's "Suspiria" is in the vein of "Tubular Bells") which was the subject of the multiple, warring factions of simultaneous bootleg pressings that usually define a zeitgeist nowhere near in sync.

Jazz albums chronicle the lives of the artists who make them, but they also stand as emblems of a time period. When alto saxophonist Jim Snidero recorded Live at the Deer Head Inn in 2020 - an outing that earned 5 stars from DownBeat for its "spellbinding … incredible prowess and tender musicality throughout" - he connected to listeners and bandmates alike in a time of social distancing and brought them emotionally near, through the healing power of live music. To recall a comparable time of societal rupture, one thinks back to 9/11, on the very morning that Snidero and his colleagues were heading to Systems Two Studios in Brooklyn to record the album that became Strings (released by Milestone in 2003).
