Both the 'AsraelSymphony' and 'Fairy Tale', considered by many the summit of Suk's achievements, are new additions to the Decca and Universal catalogues. 145 years after Suk's birth, JiříBělohlávekand the Czech Philharmonic present informed performances of two of the composer's most notable works. The 'AsraelSymphony' was composed in memory of Antonín Dvořákand his daughter, Otilie, to whom Suk was married. This release continues the series of JiříBělohlávek'slast recordings of Czech masterworks for Decca Classics before he sadly passed away in 2017. "Splendid recordings do justice to a Czech Philharmonic in fine form, producing a fitting memorial to the remarkable life of Bělohlávek." -Praise for JANÁČEK: GLAGOLITIC MASS / Limelight Magazine

The German violinist, violist and composer Friedrich Hermann (1828–1907) spent the six decades of his adult life teaching at the Leipzig Conservatoire and, although his works include a symphony, a string quartet and numerous other chamber pieces for strings, by far the largest part of his output is pedagogical in nature. But he pumped his teaching pieces full of imagination, as the studies here demonstrate. Even though the twenty Miniatures published in 1881 are intended for student violinists, many of them are tiny tone-poems intended both to engage the attention of their players and challenge their techniques – and their mix of poetry and humour should also appeal to adult listeners.

Beyond the celebrated Funeral March, Chopin’s Second and Third Sonatas testify to their composer’s astounding ease in musical structures on a much larger scale than waltzes, nocturnes – and mazurkas, such as the three that make up his Op. 63, cunningly used here to frame Javier Perianes’s latest musical project. Whether in small or large forms, the most famous of all Romantic piano composers was an absolute master of musical dramaturgy.

A great selection of classical music with good, pleasant sound. These discs are to be listened to and enjoyed; not analyzed and argued over. Just play one after the other for hours of famous pieces that take you chronologically from the Baroque through the Romantic period. It is an easy and economical way to listen to a fine general survey of great, timeless music. Plainly stated, a bargain.

Choir of The Queens College Oxford, Academy of Ancient Music - How Are The Mighty Fallen: Choral Music by Giovanni Bononcini

Genre: Classical

The Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford, Academy of Ancient Music, and an outstanding array of soloists join forces to breathe new life into the choral works of Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747). Bononcini was Handel’s main rival in London, and with little to separate the two in terms of public status and reputation, they were dubbed the Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee of London’s music scene in the 1720s. Soon after his arrival in London Bononcini was afforded the honour of writing a grand orchestral anthem – When Saul was King – for the magnificent funeral of the Duke of Marlborough. Bononcini’s music was particularly highly prized by members of London’s original Academy of Ancient Music. Given this contemporary reputation and the quality of his works for voices and orchestra, it is surprising that Bononcini sacred music has now fallen into obscurity. This is the first recording not only of Ave maris stella and Laudate pueri but also of the original D-major version of Bononcini’s Te Deum, and these works have been newly edited here from their English eighteenth-century sources.
