The great musical border crosser of the twentieth century, George Gershwin excelled in the fields of concert music and popular song alike. The son of Jewish immigrants from Russia, he was born Jacob Gershvin in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898. His father ran a great variety of small businesses, and George, in the words of the New Grove Dictionary of Music, "excelled at street sports." He also studied the piano and was introduced to the European classics by his teacher, Charles Hambitzer. Gershwin immersed himself in popular music after dropping out of school in 1914 and getting a job as a salesman for the music publisher Remick.

The name of the wind quintet ArteCombo reflects its core identity: the fusion and combination of the arts in its projects. Founded in 2007, the quintet’s aim is to innovate and surprise, both in the repertoire it plays and in the unusual venues in which it performs. Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova's new release, Liberté, is a cultural and musical dialogue between France and America. The influence of jazz plays a central role in this tribute to French and American composers whose work transcends genres and borders. Performed together with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León under Pablo González, the album’s core pillars are Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Also featured are short solo pieces that echo its central themes: three miniatures by Germaine Tailleferre, Time Peace, a miniature by Andrew Blickenderfer, and the jazzy Valse from Partita No. 5 by Fedorova's compatriot Myroslav Skoryk. Two French chansons round out Liberté, an album where freedom, jazz, and the shared spirit of France and America meet in music.
