Composer/saxophonist Kenny Garrett emerged as a distinctive voice on the national scene in 1978 with an undisputed aptitude for emotive melodic phrasing that led him to collaborations with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey and Miles Davis. With Sounds from the Ancestors, Garrett remembers the spirit of the sounds of African ancestors from church services, recited prayers, songs from the work fields, Yoruban chants and African drums, alongside tributes to Roy Hargrove and two drum pioneers — Art Blakey and Tony Allen — who all looked into the past to influence the future sound and evolution of jazz.

He didn't go so far as to call it Silk Degrees II, but Dig is as close as Boz Scaggs is likely to come to recording the sequel to his most commercially successful and, for many, best-loved record (unless you count 1977's underrated follow-up, Down Two Then Left). Reunited after all these years with Silk Degrees collaborator David Paich, Scaggs makes a successful return to the blue-eyed soul of his late-'70s works on tracks such as "Desire" and "Thanks to You," the latter featuring tastefully muted trumpet work from Roy Hargrove.

Shirley Horn is one of the great voices in jazz, her warmly breathy, slightly gritty voice investing ballads with rare depths of meaning. There's a level of emotional intensity here that's achieved by few singers, and it's made even more compelling by Horn's innate reserve. On May the Music Never End, Horn acts as producer as well, and she eschews the lush string accompaniments of 2001's You're My Thrill for the minimum accompaniment of a piano trio. It only magnifies the intimacy of her performance, with pianist George Mesterhazy's spare, understated chords gently lapping against her voice on songs like Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" and Michel LeGrand's "Watch What Happens." Long-time drummer Steve Williams adds real drama to "Everything Must Change." Horn has always had a special affinity with trumpet players–having recorded with both Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis–and here Roy Hargrove turns up on two tracks, adding subtle punch to "Take Love Easy" and "Ill Wind." There is also a guest appearance by Ahmad Jamal, and his sparkling piano further illuminates "Maybe September" and "This Is All I Am."

To celebrate his 75th birthday, Dave Brubeck recorded one number apiece with quite a variety of top jazz stars, both young and old. Some of the performances (which alternate duets with quartets) work better than others (eight are recent Brubeck compositions) but all of the musicians display mutual respect, and it is obvious that the guests are all fans of the still-masterful pianist. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove plays beautifully on his lyrical feature but Jon Hendricks, who sings "How High the Moon" as a ballad, takes it at such a slow tempo as to be dreary. Tenor-saxophonist Michael Brecker is fine on "Michael Brecker Waltz," although he sounds a bit restrained, the wittily-titled "Here Comes McBride" is a good-humored romp with bassist Christian McBride; Joe Lovano (on tenor) works well with Brubeck, and particularly memorable is the first meeting on record between Brubeck and fellow pianist George Shearing…

Reissue of very obscure Doors-ish trippy psychedelic rocker with organs from 1969. A superb example of psychedelic rock within a jazzy framework. Fantastic Hammond and guitar leads.

Unified is tenor saxophonist Stan Killian's third album and his debut for the Sunnyside label. It's high-quality, straight-ahead modern jazz, played with a real swing by Killian and his band, and enlivened by the contributions of three top-drawer guest horn players. Leader/composer Killian hails from Texas, home of Texas tenors like Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet. Killian's own sound certainly has a big, wide open, feel to it but there's a gentleness there as well, a warmth and friendliness of tone. Venezuelan pianist Benito Gonzalez has a lightness of touch that enables him to create some delicate but swinging solos, as well as some finely tuned rhythms. Killian and Gonzalez play on all seven tunes, interlacing their instrumental lines with a skill and confidence that suggests a longstanding musical relationship.
