Images: My Life in Film

The early 80's is now a quarter of a century ago! Whilst there have been many 80's compilations we feel now is a good time to release an `edgier', cooler tracklisting highlighting some of the artists and tracks that may not be as familiar, but still defined the times.

In a remarkable career spanning six decades, singer-songwriter Paul Simon has amassed 9 Grammy awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a member of Simon & Garfunkel, then in 2001 as a solo performer and composer. Encompassing nine studio albums - all contained herein - Simon's catalogue is one of the most diverse, literate, adventurous, and musically rich in all of popular music. Simon is an American treasure, and this awesome collection celebrates his ever-growing legacy.

Even more extreme is the notion that an entire soundtrack ­ dialogue, music, sound effects ­ might be considered a musical event apart from the film and the venturesome German ECM label has just made this experiment with Jean Luc Godard's 1990 Film Nouvelle Vague. The French art film uses a wide variety of classical and pop music, from Hindemith to Patti Smith and the effect is that of brilliant collage. The new multi-part documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, directed by Thom Zimny and airing on HBO on April 14, pushes past the larger-than-life image of The King of Rock and Roll, portraying him instead as a man and an artist "who wanted to heal, to find that thing that was always felt to be missing, and to do it through the music."
