asmine's first John Lee Hooker release 'Blues In Transition 1955-1959' concentrated on the recordings he made for his core audience and the emerging college folk scene which helped to propel him to international fame. This second excursion into the iconic bluesman's prolific career focuses on his material from late 1948 to 1954. By early 1949 'Boogie Chillen' was #1 on Billboard's R&B chart and was reputed to have sold over a million copies. It is these numerous boogie recordings that are collected on disc one of this unique package. Most of these discs are solo but several do feature other musicians and special note should be made of the contributions made to several tracks by these other musicians.

Frankie Lee Sims is certainly not amongst the greatest innovators of rhythm and blues and certainly not very famous. He did however have a very original sound which did help him to sell enough records, particularly in America's south to ensure he was signed to four record labels during his brief career.

The album starts off with the title tune La Habana, a breezy reggae feel with evocative keyboards bubbling with sunshine and tropical air. Emerald Dream serves up a midtempo deep groove that shimmers with smooth, wistful turnarounds and a lush harmonic backdrop. A retake of the classic God Bless the Child works off a deep pocket southern shuffle feel with a blues-inflected guitar, with a just a hint of Miles. September Song is boisterous re-adaptation of the song Jasmine by Ed Maguire on keys, with propulsive drumming from the brilliant Antonio Sanchez, masterful horn arrangements from Norihito Sumitomo that evoke cheery New Orleans as Jack puts a greasy tinge on his articulation. Southern cooking.

Eddie Taylor was considered one of the greatest of all guitarists active during the heyday of Chicago blues scene. However despite featuring on numerous hit records he never had a hit under his own name, he was to be forever in the shadow of the artists he performed with during the period covered by this CD collection. Tracks such as "Ice Cream Man", "Lifetime Blues", "Bad Boy", "Big Town Playboy", "Dimples" exude a real quality and despite them not initially achieving hit status have now quite rightfully gone on to be Chicago blues classics. Eddie Taylor never really achieved the stardom he so richly deserved, he was though a very important element in the sub-genre of Chicago blues and without his presence on so many hit records would have been notably poorer. This great CD set from Jasmine showcases his early contributions and what a great guitarist and musician he was.
