"Equinoxe" was the second major-label album release by Jean Michel Jarre, released on Disques Dreyfus (with license to Polydor) in late 1978.
The album reflects a day in the life of a human being, from morning to night. Parts 1 to 4 (i.e. side A) and tracks 5 to 8 (side B) segue smoothly from one to the next.
Jarre had developed his sound, employing more dynamic and rhythmic elements, particularly a greater use of sequencing on basslines. Much of this was achieved using custom equipment developed by his collaborator Michel Geiss.

Équinoxe (English: Equinox) is the fourth studio album by French electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, released in December 1978 on the Disques Dreyfus record label, with license to Polydor. Jarre had developed his sound, employing more dynamic and rhythmic elements, particularly a greater use of sequencing on basslines. Much of this was achieved using custom equipment developed by his collaborator Michel Geiss. The album is presented as two suites of music, each consisting of 4 parts and taking up one side of the vinyl release of the album. The separate tracks on the record smoothly segue into each other to this effect. The album reached number 11 on the UK Album Chart and number 126 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

1978's Equinoxe was one of the commercial and critical high points in French composer Jean Michel Jarre's illustrious recording career. If his debut Oxygene was a hymn to the air, Equinoxe was an ode to water; music that was fog, mist, almost organic. Jarre created in eighteen months a veritable electronic symphony of intertwining melodic themes. The electronics allowed him to evoke, not imitate the sounds of nature.

Essential: A masterpiece of progressive rock music.
The most perfect Jarre release for me, "Equinoxe" defines Jarre's classic sound extremely well, maybe even better than the previous "Oxygene" album.

On 16 November 1978 appeared ‘Equinoxe’. Forty years later, his successor appears for the day. In 1978, Jean-Michel Jarre composed and produced an album that would reflect the music of our future, revolutionizing electronic music history. As a supporting element, it was ‘Equinoxe’ to the ‘Watchers’ (the observers), which were seen on the original album cover in infinite numbers. These Watchers were in 1987, in an emerging era of technology and innovation, a symbol of machines watching us. An early vision of what the future would bring us.

2018 release. On the 40th Anniversary of his iconic Equinoxe album, Jean-Michel Jarre releases the sequel - Equinoxe Infinity. This concept album will not be a direct follow-up to the 1978 masterpiece, but rather a meditation about the watchers (the characters with binoculars) as being part of the struggle (or not) between human and artificial intelligence. Jarre describes this album as ""Equinoxe on steroids"".
