2008 four CD box set containing all of brother Ray's released recordings between 1949 and 1956. 94 tracks include classics such as 'Mess Around', 'I Got A Woman' and 'Hallelujah, I Love Her So'. This landmark set comes with a 44 page booklet that tells the story of this genius and contains session details and rare period photos. He was Ray Charles, a hero to the black community of such exalted status that no other popular entertainer, with the possible exception of Louis Armstrong, has ever achieved. Charles was the Bishop, the Right Reverend, The High Priest of Soul. Atlantic Records proclaimed him the Genius, a title he has born for over fifty years. As a singer who seduced the world with his voice, composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist, alto saxophonist, record producer and performer whose marriage of gospel and R & B helped prepare the basis for soul music, his prolific work deserves no other praise.

In the autumn of 1984 composer and arranger Steve Gray and myself were involved in a concert for Dutch radio, with the renowned Metropole Orchestra with whom we had both worked individually in the past. Another member of that production was the well known Dutch entertainer Edwin Rutten. The three of us went to supper after the concert and Edwin suggested that Steve and I might compose an original work which could be performed with the Metropole Orchestra. We were flattered and a little excited by the prospect but nothing further was discussed. In January 1985 I was on one of my regular tours of Australia when Steve called me in Sydney to say that he'd heard from Holland and the project was on!. Furthermore the proposed recording dates were March 3rd/4th and 5th. I wasn't due back in England until…

As annotator Arthur Levy points out in his newly written liner notes to this expanded version of Joan Baez's live album Ring Them Bells, things have changed since it was first released in September 1995. Guardian Records, the imprint of Capitol/EMI that released it, no longer exists. (Rights appear to have reverted to Baez, who licensed it to the British label Proper for this reissue.) The Bottom Line, the 400-seat nightclub in Greenwich Village where it was recorded, is gone, too. And worst of all, Baez's sister Mimi Fariña, who made her final recorded appearance on the album singing a duet on her late husband Richard Fariña's "Swallow Song," died in 2001. But the collection, boasting six extra tracks and stretched over two discs with a running time now exceeding 87 minutes, remains a good précis of Baez's career over its first three-and-a-half decades, as rendered by the 54-year-old singer and a group of female guest stars representing the generations of women singer/songwriters influenced by folk music's premier interpreter. In a sense, the influences can be seen as flowing both ways, since Baez sings songs written by her guests, some of which have been part of her repertoire for years – Janis Ian's "Jesse,"

Long admired for the carefully chosen cover versions of songs that have been part of their repertoire from the very beginning, Cowboy Junkies release Songs of the Recollection, consisting of nine covers both newly recorded and curated from previous album projects. Michael Timmins recalls, "Long before we were musicians, we were music fans. We didn't grow up sitting around the kitchen table playing instruments and harmonising. We grew up sitting around the record player listening to each other's record collections and having our minds blown. This was the passion that we shared. Our goal has always been to create music that took hold of the listener the way that this music took hold of us. These are some of the songs and some of the artists that found their way into our lives and eventually into our repertoire over the past fifty years." This inspired, and inspiring, collection features tracks from David Bowie, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Vic Chesnutt and The Cure.

A singer/songwriter of considerable grace and wit, Nick Lowe pioneered pub rock and punk, then settled into a dignified third act as an elegant crooner. Lowe started his career as the nominal leader of Brinsley Schwarz, a ragged collection of hippies that helped create the pub rock circuit of the early 1970s. Heavily influenced by the Band, the Brinsleys were at the forefront of a British back-to-basics rock & roll that eventually mutated into punk rock.

This is a wonderful four-disc collection of tracks from Peggy Lee's first solo stint with Capitol Records in the mid- to late-1940s, shortly after she left her spot as a singer with Benny Goodman's band in 1943, and her early sides for Decca Records, who signed her in 1952. While many would argue that her best work was done a decade later during her second go-round with Capitol, the selections here (many of them done with husband Dave Barbour and his orchestra) show an assured vocalist with a firm understanding of the pop side of jazz.

It is very difficult to review this collection of Ella Fitzgerald singing jazz greats without piling on superlatives. I've never before owned even a single CD where every cut pleased me. In this collection are 83 songs everyone a winner. According to the enclosed wonderfully illustrated 50 page booklet there are some songs were Ella is not at her best, were arrangements don't quite work. I lack the musical chops to accept or challenge these criticisms. As someone who is listening for pleasure rather than technical experience I found myself enjoying song after song.
