Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete - Live At El Matador (1966) [2016, 24-bit/352 kHz]

Bossa Nova, Cool Jazz | Label: High Definition Tape Transfers | ~ 2.40 Gb

Despite the co-billing, Sete only appears on the second half of the album, leaving the Guaraldi trio to knock out a crisp series of standard pop tunes of the time ("I'm a Loser," "People," "More") and two memorable Guaraldi originals ("Nobody Else," "El Matador") in its patented mainstream and Latin modes in the first half. When Sete turns up, the set goes all-Brazilian as the two display their blended, intertwined teamwork for the third and last time on records in "Favela" and a brace of tunes from Black Orpheus. Though it is only a partial collaboration, this album has a bit more fire than their previous ones, possibly due to the live factor.

The second portion of a 2002 performance at the Kennedy Center by Mulgrew Miller is every bit as enjoyable as the initial volume issued by Max Jazz a few months earlier, with most of the numbers stretching for twelve minutes or more, but without wearing out their welcome. The pianist's power is displayed in his turbulent "Song for Darnell," while his soulful, strutting "Grew's Tune" ought to have lyrics. "Farewell to Dogma" is a poignant ballad with a bit of gospel flavor in its introduction, though it changes character dramatically when the rhythm section (bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Rodney Green) make their delayed entrance. Miller's virtuoso interpretation of the standard "Old Folks" is a masterpiece, finding plenty of new ground to explore within this old chestnut.

Bradley's was a legendary New York City jazz club that for 25 years acted as a gathering place for many of the Big Apple's top musicians, a place to hang out. In 1996, the Kenny Barron Trio dug in before the illustrious audience and played at their best. Barron and drummer Ben Riley were members of Sphere, a quartet (with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and bassist Buster Williams) that initially paid tribute to Thelonious Monk. On this trio set, "The Only One" is based on Monk's "Hackensack," Barron takes Thelonious' "Shuffle Boil" as an unaccompanied piano solo, and the threesome jams on "Well You Needn't." The other two songs, the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" and Barron's "Twilight Song," are not connected to the pianist-composer but are excellent examples of the trio's close interplay and ability to think as one…

Lee Konitz revived his nonet for the occasion of this 1979 concert, with trumpeters Red Rodney and John Eckert, baritonist Ronnie Cuber, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and tuba player/bass trombonist Sam Burtis joining him in the front line. Lennie Tristano's "April," a challenging reworking of the standard "I'll Remember April," proves to be an inspired opener, with great solos all around. Knepper's blues "Who You" has the flavor of Charles Mingus' early-'60s compositions.
