Bobby Long (John Travolta) is a washed up former literature professor with a voracious drinking habit. He lives in a rundown house in New Orleans with Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht of The Recruit), his former star pupil, also an alcoholic. Lawson is allegedly writing a novel about Bobby. Their depressive little corner of the world is disrupted when Lorraine, the beloved eccentric singer who owns their house, dies. Her teenage daughter, Pursy (Scarlett Johansson), who hasn't seen her mother in years, arrives in town too late for the funeral, and crashes at the house..

The characters are falling in love, falling out of love, some are with right people, some are with the wrong people, some are looking to have an affair, some are in the period of mourning; a capsule summary of reality. Love begins and love ends. They flirt a lot. They are all flirting with love. At all ages and social levels, love is the theme. Romantic love and brotherly love is the hotchpotch through out the movie. Most of the movie is filmed in London, during Christmas and the characters all ended up at Heathrow airport a very uplifting note.

After several false starts, opera star Grace Moore became a motion picture success in the sublimely assembled One Night of Love. Moore opens the film by losing a radio talent contest in New York. She disconsolately heads to Europe, where the best job she can come up with is singing in a restaurant. Jun arrives in Hong Kong from mainland China, hoping to be able to earn enough money to marry his girlfriend back home. He meets the streetwise Qiao and they become friends. As friendship turns into love, problems develop, and although they seem meant for each other they somehow keep missing out.
Only the few of those movies about 1997 I find interesting and this movie is the one among them, and perhaps also the best among them. Through a love story, it shows something people should remember about hongkong before 1997. It's not a job that documentary can do well because the emphasis here is on emotion. Maggie Cheung performs very well in this movie and the role she plays successfully shows some typical values of hongkong in the past. Deep down what she values above all else is emotion although she looks crazy for money. Her going to New York is the part very moving. Peter Chan very often has a kind of "soft" power guiding audience to enter into the story and this power is applied perfectly in this movie. Several years have passed since the first time I saw this movie, and therefore I think I can give a sufficiently fair verdict - it's a real classic. Don't miss it.
