Trumpeter Miles Davis was without doubt one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the post-war era, not only as a pioneer of the bebop movement but through being at the forefront of many stylistic and musical innovations over the years. His landmark debut album for Capitol “The Birth Of The Cool”, recorded during 1949 and 1950, became regarded as seminal in the history of cool jazz, exploring unusual harmonies and textures. This excellent-value 49-track 2-CD set comprises his studio recordings in small ensembles, in which he is the only trumpeter, from his studio debut in 1945 through to the end of 1948, just weeks before the first of the “Birth Of The Cool” sessions in January 1949.

A hard-luck blues band of the '60s, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan Wilson and Bob Hite. Purists might tell you that the golden age of Bubblegum Pop occurred strictly between 1967 and 1972, but in reality its scope was far wider. Foreshadowed by the shimmering girl-pop of the early to mid 60s and followed by the novelty chart hits of the 70s and 80s, Bubblegum can be seen in almost all great pop music from the last 60 years. This 3CD set brings together many of its highlights, from The Archies Sugar Sugar to Bucks Fizz s Making Your Mind Up . You might call these hits disposable, but just try getting them out of your head!
Sahrawi singer-songwriter activist Aziza Brahim’s fifth album Mawja (Wave in Hassaniya Arabic) is fashioned from a simple but powerful foundational palette: Saharan and Iberian percussion entwining with stately guitars and warm, enveloping bass.
