Brook Benton, born Benjamin Franklin Peay was an American singer and songwriter who was popular with rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and pop music audiences during the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the mid 1960s, Benton recorded for RCA Records and Reprise Records with minimal commercial success.

This album was another brainchild of Marshall Chess' regime at Chess Records and, in a sense, is of a piece with Electric Mud by Muddy Waters – here, he's getting Ramsey Lewis, supported by an orchestra conducted and arranged by Charles Stepney, to do jazz improvisations on ten songs from The Beatles (aka The White Album).

When you open this gatefold (4 parts) CD and album, you will find a glorious tribute to Scott Finch & Gypsy. If you continue to read you will also find that Jimi Hendrix and the 60's psychedelic period of music is the entire focus of this project. I really have come to appreciate the genius of Hendrix as time passes. I also realize for the short time that he was on this earth that he left us with some of the most incredible blues-rock that we have ever heard, or may ever hear again.

This was impeccably researched and footnoted. The author says he read over 200 refereed papers in preparation to write this book, and I think they are all noted. The author is himself a respected biological scientist. It formatted like a scientific paper, except written in lay language rather than "academic speak". That is a good thing.
