The Swedish Chamber Choir makes its debut on Chandos with this fascinating programme of works for choir, choir and solo voice, and for choir and violin. The founder and conductor, Simon Phipps, leads the choir in unaccompanied works by Swedish and British composers. Maria Forsström joins them in one of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, ‘Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen’, in a sixteen-part arrangement by Clytus Gottwald, and in Judith Bingham’s The Drowned Lovers, a stark companion piece to Stanford’s The Blue Bird. The violinist Jennifer Pike joins the Choir in Ola Gjeilo’s stunning Serenity (a setting of O magnum mysterium) and Paul Drayton’s outstanding 2018 arrangement of Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending, for violin and chamber choir. Brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, which he abandoned in 1917 following the death of his father, Poulenc returned to the Church in 1936 after the death of his close friend and fellow composer Pierre-Octave Ferroud. Together these events caused a spiritual crisis in Poulenc’s life which led to a series of important compositions for chorus. The powerful Mass in G major, dedicated to the memory of his father, is notable for its daring use of tonality, though the playfulness of Poulenc’s ‘Les Six’ period is not absent. In the Sept Chansons, set to surrealist texts, and in the two sets of Motets - both very personal and penitential - Poulenc generates a huge range of emotion.

The plight of Northern Ireland throughout the 1970s and 1980s is well documented. Less widely acknowledged, though, is the unifying impact that punk rock and everything that came in it's wake had on the country's youth. Whilst violence, disenchantment and danger became everyday obstacles, punk provided an outlet, a means of expression and something beyond the political landscape in a way few other cities on earth could have understood. The Shellshock Rock film first captured this in 1978, and we proudly extend that account with three discs of tracks recorded during a period that breathed new life into the country's musical culture. The bands of Belfast and beyond created a scene entirely of their own, without the aid of an existent network of venues and publications. Punk forged alliances that reached across sectarian boundaries, and pushed back against a culture of traditions and establishment which seemed to offer very little to the country's youth. Featuring in-depth sleeve-notes, essays by both Stuart Bailie and John T. Davis, unseen imagery and, for the first time outside of Japan, the seminal Shellshock Rock film, this latest addition to our series of deep, geographically focussed sets promises to be the most vital of them all. Nowhere was punk as necessary and as life-changing as it was in Northern Ireland.

Et Jesum presents motets, antiphons, and mass sections by the Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria, arranged for countertenor voice and accompanying stringed instrument. Both the laud (the Spanish version of the lute) and the more guitar-like vihuela are used by accompanist Juan Carlos Rivera. Rivera and countertenor Carlos Mena, a youthful alumnus of the Savall school, augment arrangements of Victoria's day with efforts of their own in a similar vein, and it would take a deep specialist indeed to pick out the 400-year-old ones.

Chi-Sound Records was launched in 1976, by US music industry executive and soul producer Carl Davis, and one of the label’s first singles, which has endured the test of time and had a 21st Century resurgence by being the theme tune to the UK Broadcaster/Presenter/DJ, Norman Jay MBE, to open his national BBC Radio show.
The Chicago label produced some of the great soul Artists of the late ‘70s and became a new home for the legendary ‘Duke of Earl’, Gene Chandler, whose disco-era classic, “Get Down”, tore-up the dancefloors around the world.
