Wild Orchids marks the return of the former Genesis and GTR guitarist to his progressive rock roots. If 2005's Metamorpheus was Steve Hackett's penultimate classical record, then Orchids is his art rock flagship…

The Top 100 '80s Rock Albums span a series of genres as startling and varied as the era's neon-flecked fashions. No one was immune to the early-decade emergence of new wave, from up-and-coming acts to legacy groups – many of whom began incorporating the then-new sound into their bedrock approach.Meanwhile, classic rock and subsequently metal began a transformation into mass acceptance when the edges were smoothed out to form arena rock and hair metal, respectively. The arrival of roots, thrash, and world music influences kept things interesting, along the way. All of it made selecting the period's best releases both intriguing and deeply challenging.Check out the list below, as Ultimate Classic Rock takes a chronological look at the Top 100 '80s Rock Albums.

Oh Mercy was hailed as a comeback, not just because it had songs noticeably more meaningful than anything Bob Dylan had recently released, but because Daniel Lanois' production gave it cohesion. There was cohesion on Empire Burlesque, of course, but that cohesion was a little too slick, a little too commercial, whereas this record was filled with atmospheric, hazy production – a sound as arty as most assumed the songs to be…

New York-born singer Indra Rios-Moore, now living in Barcelona, releases her new album “Carry My Heart” this week on Verve. It comes right after her pretty successful (at least in Europe) “Heartland” album. One of the most sympathetic features of the album is the fact that Indra wanted to record an optimistic record because there was (and is) simply too much whining going on. Not that most of the current matters aren’t disheartening, but it feels good to be warmed and eased by Indra’s warm and caressing voice on covers such as “I Can See Clearly Now” or Curtis Mayfield’s “Keep On Pushin'”.

Fifty years after Bob Dylan's debut album appeared, we get Tempest. Since he returned to recording original material on 1997's Time Out of Mind, he's been rambling through American musical styles – blues, country, folk, rockabilly, swing – that were popular before he was even on the scene. Tempest continues the exploration, but more urgently than on Modern Times and Together Through Life. It's a gritty, cantankerous record with abundant images of violence, lust, and humor, though the latter is often black. His protagonists settle scores with lovers, enemies, and power brokers; they're often self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating simultaneously.

This is a great set, with some unique & powerful performances. Bob pours himself into the rarely heard Born In Time, and a faithful rendition of Love Sick, but the highlight is a duet with Van the man on Knockin' On Heaven's Door. A great looking glossy slip case with nice photos, and sharp, clean aesthetics. The title is taken from a line in Desolation Row that Bob puts a little extra emphasis on. Although Bette's last name has been spelled by some as it is in the title, it is incorrect. The filler is from 3 days later in London. It's just as clean, and offers some songs not performed in Birmingham.

Barb Jungr’s rich and vibrant new album Shelter From the Storm follows directly in the footsteps of her last, 2014’s highly acclaimed Hard Rain, by taking a Bob Dylan song for its title; in fact, it’s the latest in a series of Jungr albums to pay homage to her favourite songwriter in this way. (2002’s Every Grain of Sand and 2011’s Man in the Long Back Coat, both comprised entirely of Dylan material, and 2008’s Just Like A Woman, dedicated to the repertoire of Nina Simone, are the others.)

Joan Osborne is one of those artists who asks the question 'Who is God?' and points at you and me with the answer in "One Of Us" which is track no. 6 on her second album, titled "Relish". While this track is probably the most widely known, every single track on this album is a masterpiece. (The same goes for her third album, "Righteous Love" which I personally like - what 'like'… _adore_ - even more! Both are absolutely worth having in your CD-collection. Joan's music is emotional, her voice is strong, sexy and beautiful, the lyrics depicts intelligence and after having listened to her songs, you sure have received something valuable. A quote from Joan Osborne: "I haven't really thought about trying to do something that's current or hip right now. There's an Oscar Wilde quote: 'Beware of being too fashionable, or you'll soon be unfashionable'. I try to dig at the roots of the things that I'm drawn to, because those things, to me, are timeless. And if I take my inspiration from that, there's a greater chance the music I make will also be timeless."

"Relish", the first studio album by Joan Osborne, is a mixture of raw styles of contemporary folk, rock, and sometimes pop-rock sounds. Its biggest hit single, "One of Us", was nominated (toghether with the album) for multiple Grammies in 1996.
