The Nina Nesbitt of 2017 is not like the Nina Nesbitt of 2013, the one who arrived as if from nowhere in 2012 and scored a UK top 15 album with Peroxide in early 2014. The heartfelt, easily relatable lyrics remain, as evidenced on the multi-layered, story-telling pop of new single, The Moments I'm Missing, which was written and produced solely by Nesbitt. That character-filled voice remains, as does the razor-sharp eye for acute lyrical observations and nagging, ear-worm melodies. What's new is a desire to inject her music with more obvious pop influences, an area she dived headlong into last year on the excellent, one-off single Chewing Gum.

With an artist as wide-ranging and prolific as Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart, it can be hard to put into words what, exactly, his music sounds like. But, when it comes to Stewart's forthcoming ''NINA'', he certainly doesn't sound like himself. ''NINA'' is a thank-you note, a love letter and a kind of musical fan-fic for the late icon Nina Simone. This being Xiu Xiu, of course, Stewart's tribute album is far from a collection of straight covers. Rather, he and long-time collaborator Ches Smith ''the only person I know who could understand this in his heart and also handle the technical side of fearlessly reorienting such wonderful music'' bring Simone into focus through their own avant-dark lens.

Nina Simone was one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation, and also one of the most eclectic. Simone was a singer, pianist, and songwriter who bent genres to her will rather than allowing herself to be confined by their boundaries; her work swung back and forth between jazz, blues, soul, classical, R&B, pop, gospel, and world music, with passion, emotional honesty, and a strong grasp of technique as the constants of her musical career.
