Known to fans as "Captain Fingers" for his uncommon dexterity on the guitar, Lee Ritenour is a noted jazz artist and session musician who has been one of the leaders in his field since the early '70s. Born in Los Angeles, California on January 11, 1952, Ritenour took up the guitar when he was eight years old, and decided to make music his career when he was 12. Ritenour's parents were supportive of his ambitions, and arranged for him to study with some of the best guitar teachers in Southern California.

The Final Comedown was Blue Note's first film soundtrack and a departure for both the label and Grant Green. True, many of Green's sessions from this period dipped into funk and R&B, but most of the tracks heard here are pensive mood pieces, conceived as the backing tracks to the blaxploitation film of the same name. As can be expected, there are a handful of cuts – "Past, Present and Future," "Slight Fear and Terror," "Battle Scene" – featuring things like staccato horn punches, dramatic tympani, and little in the way of instrumental soloing – standard fare for the genre.

Compared to his earlier Blue Note recordings, organist Jimmy Smith's outings for Verve are not as strong from a jazz standpoint. Certainly his renditions of the "Theme from Joy House," "The Cat" and the "Main Title from The Carpetbaggers" are not all that significant. However, this CD has some tasteful arrangements for the big band by Lalo Schifrin and some good playing by the great organist on a variety of other blues-oriented material. Also the combination of organ with a big band is sometimes quite appealing, making this CD worth picking up despite its commercial tracks.

Lee Ritenour, a superior studio guitarist, has recorded very few jazz albums throughout his career, preferring to play melodic pop and light funk. On the rare occasions when he has had an urge to perform jazz, Ritenour has been more than happy to show off the influence of Wes Montgomery; therefore, this tribute is a logical move, even if the results are not all that exciting. Ritenour mostly plays pieces from the later (and more commercial) half of Montgomery's career, along with four of his own originals that are sort of in the tradition. He also hedges his bet a little by throwing in a Bob Marley reggae tune. For jazz listeners who wish to sample some Lee Ritenour, this is one of his better recordings, but why purchase Wes Bound when there are so many more significant Wes Montgomery albums currently in print?

This CD may be scoffed at by serious jazz listeners, and even by big-band devotees wary of modern "ghost band" performances, but the fact is that it sold over 100,000 pieces when it first appeared in 1983, and its CD version was among the very earliest compact discs ever released commercially in the United States (indeed, so early that the actual CDs had to be imported from Japan). The second-ever release by GRP Records, it put the label on the map, and it also stood as testimony to how good those original arrangements of the Glenn Miller Orchestra were. So how is it as music?

Includes his complete recordings 24-bit digitally remastered and booklet with rare photos. 2003 USA 102-track 7 CD set, each housed in its own jewel case with picture sleeve, and sleeve notes about the recordings. Chronicles the completes sessions for Verve recorded by Roy Eldridge across 7 CD's MD7-222. Limited Edition: 10000 copies. " The annals of jazz abound with nicknames: Satch, King, Pres, Lady, Count, Dizzy, Bird, Hawk, Rabbit, Lips, Fats, Curly, Slim, Slam. But only one musician was named for the music itself: Little Jazz–soon shortened to simply Jazz by Roy Eldridge's close friends. Norman Granz, who produced most of the sessions in this set, once wrote that he knew "no other musician whose playing better typifies the spirit of jazz than Roy Eldridge," and indeed Little Jazz was ALL jazz, from top to toe, the whole feisty five feet, six inches of him. Bristling with energy, "trying to outplay anybody, and outplay them my way," he was always ready to challenge all comers, but most of all, himself. "
