Jos van Immerseel: “While since its foundation in 1987 Anima Eterna Brugge has grown organically into a symphonic orchestra, chamber music once again forms an important part of our repertory today. We will continue our journey through orchestral music, but want to broaden our base by including chamber music as well.”

This 2018 release marks a notable step for Germany's audiophile MDG label, which has at least mostly made, not studio recordings, but recordings in spots acoustically appropriate to the music. Here they present North Germany's dogma chamber orchestra (the name refers to the Dogma 95 credo of Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier) in what is purported to be a live concert at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund. How live it is may be open to debate; although an audience is pictured in the album graphics, total silence is maintained. You might want to invest in whatever manufacturer made the cough drops used to calm the throats of a Dortmund audience in January, and there is no applause.

Once again, the series offers cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire, including two complete symphony cycles. In the late 1970s and early 80s, Günter Wand, one of the most revered interpreters of the Austro-German repertoire, recorded all the Schubert symphonies with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. It is still a benchmark.

Major concerts will take place in Paris this Autumn to celebrate this event.

This interpretation, based on the study of Schubert’s manuscripts and on the instruments used at the time of their first performance, showcases sound colors combining freshness and profundity. Upon its initial release, this series of 4 CDs was recognized internationally as a new reference.

It was only after his death that Franz Schubert’s symphonic works made an impact in music history. In fact, the first public performance of any of Schubert’s symphonies took place at a memorial concert held a few weeks after the composer had passed away, on 19th November 1828. The work that was heard at that occasion was Symphony No.6, D589, the ‘Little C major’, while the two undisputed master works of the series – the ‘Great C major’ and the ‘Unfinished’ – had to wait until 1838 and 1865, respectively, before being performed.
