Label: Acrobat Records | Release Year: 2015

Before his untimely death in 1963, blues guitarist Elmore James was one of the most influential players in the genre, with a distinctive sound that would inspire everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Rolling Stones. Though he covered a variety of different blues styles throughout the 1950s, his unique, amped-up tone came from a standard acoustic guitar that he had modified with electric pick-ups. This two-disc collection from the Acrobat label covers all of James' A- & B-side singles from his 1951 debut to the year just before his death. His cover of Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom" would become one of his signature songs and it leads off this 54-track collection, which also includes standouts like "The Sky Is Crying," "Rollin' and Tumblin'," and "Early in the Morning." This is a solid introduction to one of the post-war blues' biggest icons.

AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett
While Herman's Hermits will undoubtedly never get the critical respect afforded other British Invasion groups like the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, or the Kinks, as a group they weren't as silly as most people remember them. OK, maybe they were – certainly when on camera – but they and their producer Mickie Most had the good sense to pick solid songs to cover (the Goffin & King nugget "I'm into Something Good," "Silhouettes," originally done by the Rays, and Sam Cooke's great "Wonderful World"), which allowed them to sustain a hit-making career long past the end of chart action for such rival pop-oriented British Invasion acts as Gerry & the Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer. This four-disc set covers the Hermits' years with Most (1964 to 1972) about as well as one could in terms of content, representing everything the group did with him, including a brace of rarities, unreleased tracks, and sides that singer Peter Noone recorded with Most as a solo artist on the producer's RAK label. For most Hermits fans, it will seem like too much of a good thing, as all of the group's hits have reappeared numerous times in compilations too ubiquitous to list – but they would be making a terrible mistake to pass up this set. Indeed, if anything, this quadruple-disc set is too much of a great thing, if such a thing is possible (though with one important flaw). And that makes it well worth saving up for.

If there's a band that deserves a good compilation, it's the Pretty Things. Thankfully, Snapper has the rights to the band's entire catalog, and has done an excellent job of remastering individual albums. This best-of is derived from that remastered material and does the Pretty Things proud with an extensive and exhaustive trawl through the group's archives…

This fabulous radio broadcast comes from The King's Head Inn, a tiny venue popular with students near the Old Dominion University campus, in Norfolk, Virginia, that could accommodate barely 100 people. Luckily, local radio station WNOR was on hand to preserve this storming performance made on July 20th 1980 by soon-to-become-legendary Blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan.

We often cite the Reunion tour as a demarcation between the “classic” and “modern” Springsteen eras. Yet this April already marks 23 years since the start of the Reunion tour in Barcelona. Do the math, and the E Street Band’s return in 1999 is inching ever closer to being the midpoint of their overall career—a line to be reached in 2026, at which point it will have been 27 years from the start of Reunion; and Reunion itself was 27 years after the band formed in 1972. Time flies.

A lot of bands talk about balance in their songs. The balance of catchy, pop sensible vocal hooks with the raging energy of a rock n roll riot. All bands want it but most don’t have the guts to try. Louisville, Kentucky’s Hot Wires roar back with their second full length release entitled “Dark Energy” on Gubbey Records to deliver fuzzed out guitar rowdiness, high energy grooves, and a solid, pulsating rhythmic core. The album is stacked with sing along anthems inspiring you to raise your beer glass high combined with rampaging energy drenched in Ohio river dirtwater. Hot Wires evoke similarities to Sonic Rendezvous, Radio Birdman, The Rolling Stones, with a good helping of Deep Purple to not only perfect this balance but to charge ahead of the pack.
