Gene Watson emerged in the mid-'70s as the heir to the kind of straight-ahead hard Texas country pioneered in the '50s and '60s by George Jones and Ray Price. Like such peers as Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley, Watson updated the old-fashioned sound with lyrical and musical tweaks, so his hits conformed to the country airwaves of the '70s while still sounding of piece with the tried-and-true Texas tradition. Watson's first big hit arrived in 1975 when "Love in the Hot Afternoon" reached number three on Billboard's Country charts. For the next decade, he was a fixture in the Top 10, gradually coming to rely on ballads instead of two-steps. Watson's star began to fade as the '80s came to a close, but he never stopped working: He continued to record and perform into the 2010s.

The daughter of the popular late R&B singer Donny, husky voiced Lalah Hathaway is the perfect foil for Joe Sample's compelling notion that The Song Lives On. Finding a happy medium between the graceful straight-ahead jazz trio vibe of his Invitation album and the plucky pop energy of Spellbound, Sample provides Hathaway on seven of the 11 tunes with a showcase for her sultry approach. His and Bill Shnee's production approach is generally sparse, not much more than piano and bass, enhanced on occasion by Fender Rhodes and the occasional smoky input of Kirk Whalum. Sample doesn't seem to mind playing second fiddle most of the time, his trademark mix of dark chords and dancing, optimistic improvisations forming harmony lines behind her; often, though, his itchiness to step higher into the mix comes clear and he breaks into extended upbeat improvisations. On a cover of his Crusaders hit "Street Life," Hathaway turns the title into a mantra and Sample echoes her sentiments with sharp, percussive reiterations of the song's main melody. Then Hathaway stops and Michael Thompson steps in with some edgy electric guitar lines.

This release continues the series of 4-CD sets which comprises selected annual collections of the biggest US country hits of each year. This great-value 113-track collection covers the year of 1961, during which time Billboard published a country Top 30 called Hot C&W Sides, and it comprises every record which appeared in the top 22 places in that chart during the year, excluding one or two records which are unavailable for copyright reasons. Despite the fact that the pop landscape had been transformed over the preceding years by rock ‘n’ roll and its aftermath, and with the new decade the British Invasion was only a couple of years away, the charts still had a familiar look about them for country fans, with many traditional established country stars well-represented, like Ernest Tubb, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells and Ray Price. However, the smoother Nashville sound certainly characterised many of the hits and there was more than a smattering of artists who enjoyed big crossover hits, notably Leroy Van Dyke returning to the charts with his long-running No. 1 “Walk On By”, as well as Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Hank Locklin, and Faron Young.
