The Paris Pieces

After "Down and Out In Paris and London" topped my personal choices for last year it was inevitable that this was going to become part of my collection. I missed the first release of "A Place On the Shelf" last year and was pleased that the band saw fit to make it available to more people. This, a mere album of otherwise discarded tracks and unfinished demos, seems likely to be one of my favourites of this year already.

Three centuries ago Johann Sebastian Bach combined his matchless knowledge of counterpoint and inexhaustible imagination to create forty-eight pairs of preludes and fugues in all the keys. His revolutionary keyboard pieces, gathered in the two volumes of The Well-Tempered Clavier, stand among western art’s towering landmarks.

Without alot of hoopla along comes this box set that presents all of the soundboard live recordings that feature Bon Scott on vocals. Since the band was in their formative years and were a touring band they used radio as a means to get their music out to people to be heard, the majority of this set is culled from these radio broadcasts. They are not only among the best in quality but also performance.

The two essential pieces of early 20th-century ballet music by Stravinsky combined on this new CD are live recordings of concerts performed on January 16, 2009 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig (Le sacre du printemps) and on November 17, 2016 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz (L'oiseau de feu), and both feature the excellent recording quality of the Bayerischer Rundfunk.
