After many months we emerge from quarantine with new hopes for the future and new music for you ears. We hope you enjoy this new release and our exploration into the world of aural delights and cosmic inspiration in the form of a Progressive Rock record called COSMOLOGICA. Enjoy the ride. Classifying music in to genres is a funny thing. At its core, that action is anathema to me. Artists who are following their muse tend to dislike being pigeonholed and would rather think that each expression is unique. And I suppose it is. Yet we all know the blues when we hear it. Or country. Or jazz. But what about Progressive Rock? For me, the best description of Prog is “classical music using rock instruments”, (a Circe Link quote). In classical all rules can be broken. Time signatures, key changes, tempo modulation, and dynamic range are all fair game. And so, too, is it with Prog. And because it is so free, it is the least genre-fied genre, and therefore capable of being the most honest and unique artistic expression.
… Portions of the music included may remind listeners of very early classical music such as Gregorian chant, whereas other pieces will certainly cause an astonished reaction as they sound unlike any other music recorded. Some is sparse, floating, the melodic ideas developing very slowly. A few of the old-world Greek percussion instruments wind up sounding quite a bit like new-world electronic music.
Many classical music listeners will be familiar with the name Darius Milhaud, but how familiar are they with his output? The owner of a bold, individual style, Milhaud was active for much of the 20th century, a modernist who is counted among the group of composers known as Les Six (a term coined by the music critic Henri Collet in 1920) and who was much influenced by jazz, polytonality as well as the sounds of Brazil. Bringing together many of his orchestral works, some of which are conducted by the composer himself, this release is the perfect starting-point for those wishing to become acquainted with his art.
A 2018 album by Dutch band Leap Day, celebrating their 10th Anniversary. 3 new recordings, 3 new versions and one previously unreleased live track.
Leap Day was founded on the 29th of February 2008. This Dutch sympho outfit has members of wellknown bands from the world of progressive rock, such as Flamborough Head, King Eider, Nice Beaver, Trion and Pink Floyd Project. In 2008 they released their demo cd containing three songs, including Awaking The Muse which is the title of their first full-length studio album released through Oskar music in 2009. In terms of musical style we're treated to neo-prog of the vintage variety here, with nods in the directions of Camel and Genesis as far as possible influences go…
Getting French baroque keyboard music right begins with getting the trills—the grace notes—right, especially Couperin. Getting the trills right means getting them to sound like an integral part of the note upon which they are intended to lend… well, grace. Rather than as an adornment, which invariably comes across as an affectation. Trills are the vibrato of a plucked keyboard, designed to give the note more extension. Pierre Hantaï, one of the world’s finest harpsichord players, gets the trills right. He gets them so right I didn’t even notice at first why his Couperin sounds so good.
