Northern Lights – Southern Cross is the sixth studio album by Canadian-American rock group the Band, released in 1975. It was the first album to be recorded at their new California studio, Shangri-La, and the first album of all new material since 1971's Cahoots. All eight songs are credited as compositions of guitarist Robbie Robertson. The album was well-received critically: Rolling Stone declared that The Band had kicked "a field goal", and, while he was put off by the sentimentality of the lyrics, Robert Christgau wrote "the pure comeliness of every melody on this album led to an immediate infatuation".

Octopus is the fourth album by British progressive rock band Gentle Giant. It was the band's last album with founding member Phil Shulman and the first with new drummer John Weathers, who would remain with the band until their dissolution in 1980. Octopus remains a highly regarded example of the progressive rock genre and is generally considered to represent the start of the band's peak period.

Music from Big Pink is the debut studio album by legendary group The Band. It was released in 1968, and the title refers to "Big Pink", a house shared by Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson where some of the music for the album was composed. Al Kooper of Rolling Stone gave the album a rave review, and the album also gained attention due to the fact that Bob Dylan co-wrote three songs (as well as illustrating the cover art himself). In the years since its release, Music from Big Pink has been praised by many; Roger Waters has called it the second "most influential record in the history of rock and roll" after Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and that it "affected Pink Floyd deeply, deeply, deeply". The album was ranked #34 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Paradise Theatre is the tenth album by the rock band Styx, released in January 1981. A concept album, the album is a fictional account of Chicago's Paradise Theatre from its opening to closin, used as a metaphor for America's changing times from the late 1970s into the 1980s. It was the most successful album by Styx, peaking at #1 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Album Chart in April and May 1981. It was the band's fourth consecutive triple-platinum album.

Reggatta de Blanc is the second studio album by English rock band The Police, released in October 1979. It features the band's first two UK No. 1 hits: "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". It was their first album to reach No. 1 on the UK Album Charts. Reggatta de Blanc proved both more popular and successful than its predecessor. The title track earned the band their first Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1980. In 2012, the album was ranked No. 372 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Pentangle (or The Pentangle) are a British folk-jazz band with an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, blues and folk rock influences. The original band was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and a later version has been active since the early 1980s. Their debut album "The Pentangle" brought together their separate influences of folk, jazz, blues, early music and contemporary songwriting. One of the band's most commercially successful albums, it reached number 21 in the British charts.

Destroyer is the fourth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss. This is one of Kiss' most experimental studio albums, but also one of their strongest and most interesting. The album marked a departure from the raw sound of the band's first three albums. Destroyer is the first Kiss album to prominently feature outside musicians, such as members of the New York Philharmonic. One musician not credited was Dick Wagner, from Alice Cooper's band, replacing Ace Frehley on the track "Sweet Pain". Wagner also played the acoustic guitar found on the song "Beth".
