"The Ljubljana Jazz Festival has the good policy to program either veterans or newcomers who already proved their value, and here is the recording of the incendiary concert presented at the 2014 edition of that event by young piano jazz trio De Beren Gieren. After collaborations with the likes of Ernst Reijseger, Louis Sclavis and Jan Klare, this time the Belgian improvisers Fulco Ottervanger, Lieven Van Pee and Simon Segers have Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva as special guest.

Double Bassist Eric Revis expands his concepts in this outstanding album with fellow New Yorkers, pianist Kris Davis and drummer Chad Taylor, and Chicago reedist Ken Vandermark on tenor saxophone, with all four players providing compositions that push the limit on structure and form while opening up the players to superb soloing settings of great modern jazz.

Portuguese pianist Daniel Bernardes studied both composition (with Emmanuel Nunes and Karlheinz Stockhausen) and jazz (with Carlos Barretto and João Paulo Esteves da Silva, two names of the Clean Feed catalogue). “Liturgy of the Birds” comes from his explorations of Olivier Messiaen's compositional techniques, applied here to a jazz setting, bringing together a piano jazz trio (with double bassist António Augusto Aguiar and drummer Mário Costa, the same of “Oxy Patina” and the Emile Parisien Sfumato Quintet) with Drumming GP, an international reference in the world of modern percussion. "Liturgy of the Birds" is an hommage to Olivier Messiaen, alluding to his profound devotion to Christianity and his love of the birds to the point of notating and using their chants throughout his works. To Bernardes, «the language of Messiaen is a possible path to contemporary jazz», and listening to this astonishing record we have to agree with him. If you’re searching for something new and surprising, search no more: here it is.

Julius Hemphill really has a noble heir in Marty Ehrlich, and the fact that this multi-reed player includes a cellist in his quartet makes us remember Hemphill’s association with the great Abdul Wadud. Ehrlich’s first recording of his Rites Quartet for Clean Feed, “Things Have Got To Change”, contrasted his compositions, both rhythmic and reflective, with never- before recorded pieces by Hemphill. Ehrlich’s new recording with his Rites Quartet, “Frog Leg Logic”, presents a broad canvas of original compositions that further define his concept for this ensemble.

Renku – the kindred-spirit New York trio of saxophonist Michaël Attias, bassist John Hébert and drummer Satoshi Takeishi – was named after a collaborative, improvised form of Japanese poetry that balances freedom and precision. The trio makes music like its name: searching and empathetic, thoroughly in the moment, resonant with meaning. Renku played a two-night stand at Manhattan’s Greenwich House in early 2014 to launch a second decade together, recording the shows for the band’s third album following Renku (Playscape, 2005) and Renku in Coimbra (Clean Feed, 2009).

The album "In Cahoots" is an inventive, atmospheric, and exploratory trio session, featuring Ned Rothenberg (clarinet, alto saxophone, bass clarinet, shakuhachi), Mark Feldman (violin), and Sylvie Courvoisier (piano). Each track is full of tension and dynamic interplay. A standout track is "Epic Proportions," where Courvoisier's piano excursions reach out far into the unknown, building and then tearing down, pushing in one direction then pulling back. Rothenberg and Feldman each draw upon diverse influences - Japanese classical music and gypsy folk – that mix with Courvoisier's sound, coagulate and then quietly burst. The interplay is tight and full of surprising turns and twists. The title track, "In Cahoots," exemplifies this, a twelve plus minute improvisation that blurs the sounds of all three instruments into a very organic, and highly developed soundscape.

It makes so much sense for a Portuguese record label to release a new opus of the New York pianist and composer Jacob Sacks, considering his many connections with the jazz scene of this country and musicians like João Lencastre, Sara Serpa, André Matos, Gonçalo Marques and Demian Cabaud. Sacks is widely recognized as one of the most creative musicians in his hometown, and “Fishes” presents him in the company of other notable protagonists of the New York jazz scene, all of them members of the Clean Feed family: Ellery Eskelin, Tony Malaby, Michael Formanek and Dan Weiss.

"When Universal Indians invited Joe McPhee to be part of upcoming tours and recording they wanted the original spirit of american free jazz. Joe brought his knowledge and great spirit uplifting the music in his melodic and profound way. Results are beautiful as Dikeman's fury is complemented by McPhee's poetry and lyrical approach and rythm section is a powerhouse sometimes to turn into delicacy when the music asks for it.

Adam Lane is doing some magic. If you didn’t noticed, here’s a new opportunity you shouldn’t miss. And why? Because the bassist, composer and arranger is taking the big band format in jazz (in this case a septet) some steps beyond. You know there’s not much happening nowadays in this field. Even the best examples of good orchestral work follow the same old patterns, without adding anything really new to what was done before. The Full Throttle Orchestra is an exception.
