Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber obviously loved American folk music as much as any of the kids who had their head turned around by Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music in the 1950s, but unlike the many musicians who paid tribute to America's musical past by trying to re-create it as closely as possible, as The Holy Modal Rounders Stampfel and Weber opted to drag the music into the present, shrieking and giggling all the way.

Original Folk Blues is a compilation album by American bluesman John Lee Hooker, released in 1967. It mostly features songs that Hooker recorded for Bernard Besman in Detroit, Michigan, between 1948 and 1954 they were originally issued by Modern Records. During the mid-1960s American folk music revival, there was increased interest in older blues music. Chess Records responded with its The Real Folk Blues series of albums, which compiled earlier singles by several of its most popular blues artists, including Hooker.

The second of Ace's three volumes documenting the Goldwax's label complete run of singles enters what most connoisseurs would consider to be its prime period, with all of the tracks having first been issued in 1966 and 1967. In particular, this era found Goldwax's most prominent artist, James Carr, releasing some of his most heralded songs, including "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man" and "The Dark End of the Street." It's no surprise that Carr is the most heavily represented member of Goldwax's roster on this two-CD compilation, as he's responsible for ten of its 54 tracks.

Jeannie Seely - Thanks, Hank! (1967)  Music

The Hank in the title refers to Hank Cochran, not Hank Williams, because Jeannie Seely recorded as many of Hank Cochran's songs as Connie Smith did of Bill Anderson's. The album leads off with the hit "A Wanderin' Man" before covering a number of Cochran's songs that were hits for other artists, such as Burl Ives' "A Little Bitty Tear" and "A Funny Way of Laughin'." Side two bogs down a little with ballads, but closes with the ever-popular "Make the World Go Away." The Pennsylvania-born Seely helped set the pattern for contemporary country artists since she looked like a model and had a very pop-oriented voice, but today she seems like Kitty Wells compared to some of the pure pop that has since passed for country. Thanks, Hank! was later reissued by Harmony, Columbia's budget label, with the title Make the World Go Away. ~ Greg Adams

Glen Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was also a major genre-crossing success, winning the year's coveted Album of the Year Grammy Award and topping Billboard's Country Albums chart at No. 1 and reaching No. 15 on the Billboard 200. The Platinum-certified album's title track hit No. 1 on the Country Singles chart and peaked at No. 26 on the Hot 100, and the song earned two Grammy Awards for Campbell: Best Vocal Performance, Male and Best Contemporary Solo Vocal Performance.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's second album is a masterpiece. From the opening bars of Jackson Browne's "Shadow Dream Song," the high spirits overflow the grooves (or ones and zeros, on the CD) of the record. The singing and playing are more confident, and some of the songs - including the bluesy "Ooh Po Pe Do Girl" and the hook-laden "I'll Search The Sky" by Jeff Hanna, and Copeland and Noonan's (the "Buy for Me the Rain" team) "Tide of Love" - are as solid as anything coming out of California. Even the kazoo-dominated "Coney Island Washboard" and "Happy Fat Annie" and the nostalgic '20s-styled Jackson Browne-written "It's Raining Here in Long Beach" fit well into the mix, reflecting the full range of the band's influences…

Love's Forever Changes made only a minor dent on the charts when it was first released in 1967, but years later it became recognized as one of the finest and most haunting albums to come out of the Summer of Love, which doubtless has as much to do with the disc's themes and tone as the music, beautiful as it is…

This 1967 concert recorded at the Anaheim Convention Center, just a few weeks after his Hollywood Bowl show, was recorded in its entirety and released as a single LP with a total of 14 tracks. This double-disc CD reissue contains 23 tracks, and is, as it survives, the entire gig. In addition, the sound has been painstakingly remastered; the result is a brilliant sounding document…
