In many ways, the California Jam was the equivalent of the Woodstock festival to a burgeoning generation of hard rock and heavy metal fans. Woodstock had changed the face of music in 1969; the California Jam took place five years later down the line. During that time, flower-power had wilted and peace-and-love hippy ideals had been replaced by a culture of wildeyed excess…
Amid the ever-growing tide of Deep Purple box sets (this was at least their eighth in nine years), Listen Learn Read On stands alone, not only as the ultimate round-up of the band's greatest moments, but also as the answer to more collectors' dreams than most collectors were even aware they'd had. You want Deep Purple's long-legendary, but forever unavailable BBC sessions? They're here. You want the killer live encores that other albums omitted? They're here. You want a solid introduction to the band members' pre-Purple passages? They're here. And, of course, you want the hits. So they're here as well…

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. The band is considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Originally formed as a progressive rock band, the band shifted to a heavier sound in 1970. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide…
Deep Purple co-founder and organist Jon Lord was remembered at the Royal Albert Hall back in April this year when some friends and musicians (Glenn Hughes, Bruce Dickinson, Ian Paice, Don Airey and Rick Wakeman and Paul Weller) assembled to pay tribute to him…
In 1974, Deep Purple brought its new lineup to the United States for a tour to support Burn, the first album to feature David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, who had replaced Ian Gillan and Roger Glover on vocals and bass respectively…

This live set taped at the Kilburn State Gaumont in London on May 22nd 1974 by the BBC, who found it easier to record a concert from the tour rather then get the band into the studio as in previous years.
Since it was first broadcast, this recording has remained an (officially) unheard but much demanded item amongst Mk III Deep Purple funs. Rather hastily mixed at the time for an experimental broadcast in quadrophonic on June 6th 1974 the tapes have here been completely remixed, whilst special cutting had enabled us to include almost an hour of unedited music in its original running order - only the rather over-long set closer Space Truckin` being omitted.
US underground heavy rock sensations Poobah released this very fine sophomore effort U.S. Rock back in 1976, and the folks at Ripple Music are making it available once again, remastered and with 4 bonus tracks, lyrics, and photos. If you haven't heard of this band or discovered their kick ass proto-metal sound, this is as good a place to start as any.
