This eight CD clamshell boxed set, compiled and annotated by Spirit archivist Mick Skidmore, gathers together the albums ‘Spirit of ‘76’, ‘Son Of Spirit’, ‘Farther Along’, ‘Future Games’ and ‘The Thirteenth Dream’ – all newly remastered from the original master tapes. Additionally the collection features an incredible 102 bonus tracks drawn from previously unreleased live concerts from 1974 and 1975, along with rare demos, including the entire early demo version of ‘Future Games’. It also includes an illustrated booklet with a new essay.

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on jazz and complicated, modern serious music, sometimes inducing orchestras to play along. As if his music were not challenging enough, he overlay it with highly satirical and sometimes abstractly humorous lyrics and song titles that marked him as coming out of a provocative literary tradition that included Beat poets like Allen Ginsberg and edgy comedians like Lenny Bruce.

De samenstelling was in handen van Leo Blokhuis, Het Nederland Instituut voor Beeld en geluid (Oscar Smit) en schrijver Ed Hoogeveen. De vier compact discs geven een beeld van de ontwikkeling van de Nederpop, maar laat daarbij vooral het onbekend repertoire horen. Voorwaarde om opgenomen te worden in deze verzameling, was dat het nummer nog niet voorhanden was op een normale compact disc.
