Truth be told, there’s a decent chance that I wouldn’t be here writing within these hallowed halls without Brothers of Metal. You see, back in 2017 I was a mere lurker at AMG, and might have been content to continue in that capacity if I hadn’t seen a commenter recommending Prophecy of Ragnarök, the debut from the aforementioned Swedes. I checked it out and fell so hard for its sometimes hilarious, sometimes deadly serious take on Norse-mythologized folky power metal that I felt compelled to create a Disqus account just so I could express my thanks to the recommender.1 This broke the seal, and I slowly began to infect the comment section with awkward conversation and terrible jokes and eventually answered the casting call. Needless to say, I was beyond excited to hear that a follow-up to PoR was inbound, but is there any chance that it can live up to the expectations set by one of my very top albums of 2017?

VOCES8 looks toward home for a breathtaking journey around the British Isles with music that crosses boundaries of both geography and musical genre. The breadth on offer is staggering: Radiohead’s anthemic “Pyramid Song” emerges as a new choral classic and Clannad’s “Theme from Harry’s Game” is haunting in its newly crafted harmonic richness. But the ensemble reaches back, too—a once-lost folk song from the abandoned island of St Kilda (“Soay”) adds mystery, while Tavener’s “Song for Athene,” perhaps best-known from the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales, is a throwback to 1997 and a nation in grief. And the original works by British and American composers are simply ravishing. There’s passion and conviction here, and a choral blend that carries each note skyward.

The Enya-Related Artists web page was the first online source to reveal that that Hardiman and Dowdall recorded earlier under the monniker "Shannon" on the Celtic Classics (Honest Music (USA) HON CD 0007, 1995) album. Themes developed within the album (especially "Ring of Kerry" to "Celtic Dream") can be heard recurring in Lord Of The Dance. The album also has an 'Enya-esque' flavour to it; the artists clearly capitalised on the rise of this style of music in the mid-1990s in creating the recordings.

This CD is sawed off version of what was in the film, probably to make it a Zimmer showcase (does Zimmer need a showcase). Aside from the one Mozart piece and Larry Wright's drum solo, the CD is all Zimmer. No Enya. No Soul II Soul. No David Carr. No Zorba the Greek. No more Mozart. Etc. etc. I don't think this should deter you from enjoying this CD unless you happen to focus on the other pieces in the film. I mean Zimmer is a noted film scorer. I think the oddest thing about this CD is the title of the film protagonist's composition: in the film it was "For" Bronte, not "Pour" Bronte. I mean, that was right in the film. See Enya's Watermark CD for her work in the film.
