The focus for Martin Frutiger’s third album of works for cor anglais and piano is on romantic-impressionist French music, with works by Koechlin and Bozza, but also first recordings of the Quatre Pièces by Clémence de Grandval, a Saint-Saëns student and romantic virtuoso. There are also works by the legendary French oboe teacher Gustave Vogt and his students together with a few rarities from Florent Schmitt, François Rasse, Edouard Barat and others. This means that the entire European, romantic original repertoire for cor anglais and piano are covered in a trilogy of albums on Guild. Martin Frutiger was born in Bern and studied with Professor Hans Elhorst at the Bern University of the Arts. He continued his oboe studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in the master class of Professor Günther Passin. From 2001 to 2003 he played in the Orchester-Akademie of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Since 2004, he has been principal cor anglais player with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.

In the winter of 2012/13, the Haus der Kunst in Munich – one of Europe’s most important museums for contemporary art – hosted the exhibition ECM – A Cultural Archaeology. The goal of curators Okwui Enwezor and Markus Müller was to show the range of the label’s artistic endeavours in music, graphic art, and photography and its creative interchanges with film, theatre and literature. For this exhibition, Manfred Eicher and Steve Lake created this box-set accentuating directions in ECM's rich musical history. Many themes and streams are touched upon here including the range of composition in the New Series, music for and from films, imaginative historical reconstructions, trans-cultural music, ambient minimalism, and jazz and improvisation of many hues, in a collection with a playing time of more than seven hours.

When Jorge Bolet died in October 1990 the world lost one of its last ‘great Romantics’. Spirituality, a luxuriant tonal palette, a real sense of architecture, breadth, grandeur, all allied to a prodigious technique – these were just some of the qualities that informed his playing. Now, for the first time, Decca collects all the recordings he made for the label, from 1977 to 1990. Released for the first time and included in this set, is his last recording, a selection of Chopin’s Nocturnes and the Berceuse, recorded just seven months before his death. Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1914, Bolet was the fifth of six children. Showing an early aptitude for the piano, Bolet was able, through private funding as well as pure serendipity (something that informed several key moments in his professional life), to study at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia with David Saperton, who also taught Shura Cherkassky, Abbey Simon and the young Julius Katchen. Saperton was the son-in-law of Leopold Godowsky and later, Bolet took lessons with him.

An outstanding edition of César Franck's complete organ works on the occasion of the 200th birthday. The perception of César Franck as an organ composer centers on his twelve large-scale works, which are considered among the most radiant contributions to organ literature. However, it should not be forgotten that with the collection L'Organiste he wrote 63 shorter, but compositionally very elaborate pieces, which due to their vignette-like, compact facture do not reach the complexity of his "large" organ works, but are nevertheless very remarkable: each one of the pieces has a signature all its own, and is in no way inferior to Franck's extensive organ works in terms of harmonic complexity and focus of expression.
