When last we heard from Brooklyn composer-saxophonist Marcus Strickland, on 2016's Nihil Novi, he was testing his mettle at hip-hop-inspired production, blending genres with a little help from album producer Meshell Ndegeocello. Dan Del Santo's legendary 1981 reggae-bayou-funk-swing-afro-calypso-mariachi-jazz private press classic, remastered and reissued for the first time ever since it's release. Dan Del Santo may very well be the greatest musician you've never heard of. He was a true staple of the Austin local music scene in his time, but without proper distribution to take his music further, and a career brought to a screeching halt from having to flee the country during the war on drugs in 1990, he faded into relative obscurity. Utopia Unearthed is working with Dan's family and friends to resurrect his music, as well as document his life and career.

Soca developed in Trinidad and Tobago, and while it's a music that has been documented, there are many areas in its history that are relatively murky. Bear Family's 2015 compilation Nappy: Music Man shines a spotlight on Richard "Nappy" Mayers, a singer, guitarist, producer, and arranger who began his career with a band called Embryo and had some solo singles in addition to working with other artists. Bear Family's disc – which is exceptionally well-annotated by Dave Elcock – contains 19 of these sides, all recorded between 1975 and 1981, drawing heavily from Embryo's discography and containing a fair share of singles from Nadie La Fond, in addition to singles by Ceasar, Sound Revolution, and Nappy himself.
