Best known for their 1969 paper hit “Iron Leg,” the mixed instrumental combo Mickey & the Soul Generation came to semi-national attention following Nipsey Russell’s performance of the Iron Leg dance on Johnny Carson. Though they shared a label with Ben E. King, they lacked access to the same promotion and marketing resources. A tour with Sam & Dave and opening slots for James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and The Supremes found them performing for thousands nightly, but still sleeping on floors. By the mid-’70s the group had fractured, with members joining the army, bottling Coke, and starting families. Their run would end in 1977 with two members turning in a passing Average White Band impression called “Southern Fried Funk” before their handful of 45s fell completely out of vogue and made their journey to thrift shops and cut-out distributors.

Formed in 1977, X is pushing up against a half century as a band, watching their friends in the Germs, the Bags, Black Flag and even chart toppers the Go-Go's come and go. Sure, X hasn't been totally active that entire time, but no one, especially the band themselves, expected their run to last as long as it has. If you've read this far, you're more than likely familiar with X—the Los Angeles band with a now-classic debut LP named after their hometown that helped set the standard for arty punk and influenced a generation, expanding the movement in SoCal to the far reaches of the world in the late '70s and early '80s. Between the duelling John Doe and Exene Cervenka vocals, the Americana-influenced early punk riffs and the great songwriting, X cemented their place as a key band of the early punk movement, one that could be said in the same breath as Talking Heads, Ramones, and Television.

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) is considered a literary iconoclast and a pioneer of the Beat Generation (along with William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg) who is recognized for his method of spontaneous prose. He became an underground celebrity and, with other beats, a progenitor of the hippie movement.

Mojo Magazine is a great newspaper, but the compulsion to repeat certain genuflections sometimes tends to get on the nerves, especially when it comes to Who (number 261 of August 2015), but which shines with quintessential Britishness. However, the umpteenth cover for the performers of the song referred to in the title brings with it this CD which, subtitled '15 Tracks Of '60s Beat-Filled Teenage Mod Angst' lines up a handful of groups (almost) never rose to fame, but who well represent the spirit of their times in a sort of minor Nuggets: all English, with one exception, give life to a fluctuating program in quality, but overall very entertaining to listen to. Given the period, the common denominators are still blues and rhythm 'n' blues, albeit reworked from different points of view, as the initial Don't Bring Me Down of the only big name on the bill, namely the Pretty Things, immediately makes clear. Even closer to overseas models is Bo Street Runner, an eponymous song for a group in which a young Mick Fleetwood was a member, then we move towards sounds with a greater dose of pop starting from the revival of It's Not True by the New Zealanders Larry's Rebels.
