Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues - A Musical Journey (2003)
Blues | 5cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Hip-O Records 80000393-02 | 1840Mb

This five-disc, 116-track box set presents a sweeping history of the blues from its emergence in the early 1900s clear through to its various contemporary guises, and includes samples of country blues in all of its regional variations, as well as cuts from string bands, jug bands, jazz combos, gritty Chicago blues outfits, and a look at how rock artists like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix incorporated the blues into their distinctive styles. Intelligently gathered and arranged, it treats the blues both from a historical perspective and from a working assumption that the form is still alive and well, continually morphing and transforming itself. There simply isn't a better or deeper survey of the blues on the market.

Much of the power of the civil rights movement came with its speeches, but the movement lived just as actively through music. Whether it was blues, folk, gospel, jazz, or R&B, and whether the artist was part of the cause or simply feeling the same yearnings, the music of the civil rights movement provided focus, unity, strength, and power. Time Life's three-disc box set, Let Freedom Sing! Music of the Civil Rights Movement, not only appeared at an auspicious moment in civil rights history – early 2009, when the United States inaugurated its first black president – but it easily ranks as the most thorough look at the music that came to be identified with civil rights.

This 7 DVD set features rare archival performance footage of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Eric Clapton and many more. It also features newly filmed performances by contemporary artists singing classic blues songs. It may have been underrated when first broadcast on PBS on consecutive nights in the fall of '03, but executive producer Martin Scorsese's homage to the blues is a truly significant, if imperfect, achievement. "Musical journey" is an apt description, as Scorsese and the six other directors responsible for these seven approximately 90-minute films follow the blues–the foundation of jazz, soul, R&B, and rock & roll–from its African roots to its Mississippi Delta origins, up the river to Memphis and Chicago, then to New York, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

A similar compilation was released in 2016 with the subtitle "100 Legendary Blues Classics", but somehow for a wide audience it went quite unnoticed. Perhaps that is why Demon Music Group this time decided to combine and produce a doublet again 100 Hits of The Blues and almost simultaneously 100 Hits Jazz (a bit late, and this rip will appear on the tracker). Yes, here mainly represented by a classic of the Blues. But what would be with modern Blues without this classic…

This album is one of only a few that Chicago blues singer and guitarist Lefty Dizz recorded, and it is a very good one. Here he is backed by a solid group that includes Willie James Lyons on second guitar, Johnny "Big Moose" Walker on piano, "Mojo" Elam on bass and Odie Payne on drums. Highlights include great renditions of classics such as "Take Out Some Insurance", "Cummins Prison Farm", and "Blue Shadows", as well as a few Dizz originals, including "I Found Out" and "Funny Actin' Woman". "Big Moose" Walker takes over the lead on the final four cuts, which are solid as well. These include a version of "Well Alright", Walker's own "One Eyed Woman", and two rocking boogie instrumentals. If you want to hear some pure Chicago blues, pick this album up, you will definitely be satisfied.

Blues is a vocal and instrumental form of music based on the use of "blue notes." It emerged in Black communities of the United States from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The use of blue notes and the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics are indicative of African influence. "Blue notes," also known as "worried notes," are the typically flattened third, fifth, and seventh degrees in a major scale. This is what gives the blues its inherent minor tonality.
