Leonard Bernstein's association with the Israel Philharmonic began early in his career as a conductor and composer, and in 1977 the orchestra organized a Bernstein Festival to mark the 30th anniversary of their first concert together. The festival lasted two weeks and consisted solely of works composed by Bernstein. Later that same year, in August of 1977, they appeared together at the Berlin Festival, which is when (and where) these live performances were recorded.

This album was what got me first hooked on Hilliard & Co. It's a very touching music that left me in tears. Well, kinda. At any rate, here's a double-shot: one from the Hilliard Ensemble, and another rendition from the Deller Consort.

It may draw on the influences of Serge Gainsbourg, Carole King and James Taylor, but Jonathan Jeremiah's Good Day is far from a time capsule. If there's anything this singer-songwriter has learned over the years, it's that ''timing is a feeling, and music is a feeling and when you get people playing together, it's about that feeling.'' Good Day was recorded at Ray Davies's Konk Studios, which Jeremiah described as ''a beautiful environment in which to get six or seven people together.'' He didn't stop there, however, cramming a 19-piece string and horn section into the room. ''That's what I'm trying to capture with my records,'' he explains, ''the sound of people together.''

It's great to see this music being played with such conviction. We all know that Alsop is a superb Bernstein conductor, and Naxos already has a terrific account of the First Symphony from James Judd and the New Zealand Symphony, but this newcomer is, if anything, even finer certainly sonically and conducted with even more pizzazz. In the central Profanation movement, Alsop really does outdo Bernstein himself; the playing of the Baltimore Symphony here is sensational, and in the finale Jennifer Johnson Cano sings with great sensitivity and a beautiful tone.

At the age of 21, Leonard Bernstein wrote what he described as a ‘Hebrew song’ using a text from the Lamentations of Jeremiah. Three years later the song became the final movement of his Symphony No. 1 and in January 1944 Bernstein himself conducted the première of the work. What is being lamented is the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, but according to the composer, he primarily wanted to convey the text’s ‘emotional quality’.
