After his one-album stint at Asylum Records with Luxury You Can Afford in 1978, Joe Cocker was without a record label until 1981, when he signed to Island Records. Island head Chris Blackwell took him to the Compass Point studios in the Bahamas, where he recorded a 12" single, "Sweet Little Woman"/"Look What You've Done," released in May 1981, then continued working on a full-length album. When that album, Sheffield Steel, appeared a year later, listeners could be forgiven for imagining, during the instrumental portions, that they were hearing not a Joe Cocker disc, but rather a Robert Palmer record. The instrumentalists were the Compass Point All-Stars, led by drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare, and including keyboard player Wally Badarou and guitarist Barry Reynolds, and they maintained a steady tropical groove on most tracks that strongly recalled their work on Palmer's series of albums…

Joe Cocker "The Ultimate Collection 1968-2003", is the first Cocker CD compilation, to adequately cover his entire career since 1968 to 2003. With 30 tracks, this is a fine sampling of some of his biggest hits. This is the perfect CD for someone who is considering buying a Cocker Cd for the first time. Disc one is by far the stronger cd, with classic tracks like, "Feelin' Alright", "Unchain My Heart", "You Are So Beautiful", "The Letter", "When The Night Comes", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" and "Cry Me A river", just to name a few. Disc two has some nice tracks from his more recent efforts, like "Could You Be Loved", "The Simple Things", "Have A Little Faith", "Never Tear Us Apart" and a great take on Leonard Cohens "First We Take Manhatten".

Although Cocker's Capitol material wasn't as consistent as his A&M work, this compilation successfully distills the highlights, including the splendid "When the Night Comes," onto a single CD.

Although there are many Joe Cocker compilations available on the market, 2007's CLASSIC COCKER provides the service of focusing on his finest vintage tunes. Renowned for his gravelly voice and passionate delivery, the British pop/rock performer shines on his hit Beatles covers "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," as well as his stirring take on the Box Tops' "The Letter," all of which are featured here.

Joe Cocker is a star whose success has always been touched with sadness; a performer whose performing span was limited by the sheer destructiveness of the performance. Only singers of opera, surely, can sustain such an act: and then only by restricting their movements on stage and going easy on the whisky and cocaine. So Joe was the jaded rock star of 1973/74; like John Lennon forgetting himself in a New York nightclub, Joe's music was going to seed. Only John claims it wasn't like that at all - and Joe didn't lose it completely.

Greatest Hits features most, but not all (no "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" or "It's a Sin When You Love Somebody"), of his biggest hits from the early '70s. Nevertheless, there's plenty of fine music here, making the record a solid compilation.

At once rousing and intimate, Joe Cocker's Greatest Love Songs gathers some of his most romantic performances from the '60s through the '90s, including the classic "You Are So Beautiful" and his hit duet with Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong." Covers of rock love songs like "Just Like a Woman," "Something," and "Darling Be Home Soon" dominate the album, and Cocker's warm, soulful delivery makes each of these tracks a highlight. "That's the Way Her Love Is," "Heart Full of Rain," and some of the other more recent performances on the collection suffer from over-production and don't quite equal the spark of Cocker's previous material; fortunately, Greatest Love Songs features a fair portion of his earlier work, with songs like "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," "Performance," and "If I Love You" also among the collection's standouts. Spanning smooth ballads and fiery declarations of love, Greatest Love Songs is a cohesive but nuanced compilation of Cocker's romantic side.

He is a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning artist.
