The Grosses Festpielhaus in Salzburg has been the scene of countless memorable musical events - operas, concerts and recitals - for 50 years. Here is a unique chance to celebrate the glories of this distinguished era. In an exceptional collaboration with the Salzburg Festival, we have prepared a 25-CD box set - 5 complete operas, 10 concerts and 2 recitals - featuring many of the world's greatest artists, in recordings with classical status and others that are appearing on CD for the first time. Dmitri Shostakovich was the Soviet Union’s greatest composer and a prime example of the artist under a totalitarian system. His works – including the 15 symphonies in this collection – unite powerful emotional expression with formal mastery. These acclaimed recordings are conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Myung-Whun Chung, Neeme Jarvi, Herbert von Karajan, Andre Previn and Mstislav Rostropovich – among his finest interpreters.

The two DVDs last for 161 minutes. The picture is digitally remastered, the sound in PCM stereo and DTS 5.1 crisp and clear. The films are quite well done, utilizing concert footage as well as discrete studio closeups. Karajan's Brahms performances are exemplary and are most strongly recommended.
