In FOLKSONGS from Duo Apollon, soprano Anastasia Malliaras and classical guitarist Aaron Haas conjure up pastoral scenes that appeal both for their universally human and unique cultural expressions. The album features the works of Maurice Ravel, Manuel de Falla, Benjamin Britten, and Mátyás Seiber, all of whom drew inspiration from a variety of folk music traditions. Ravel’s Cinq Mélodies Populaires Grecques, for example, recalls five Greek melodies from the island of Chios. Though Ravel set the songs in his native French, Duo Apollon performs them in the original Greek. Here, as in the rest of the album, the arrangement for voice and guitar results in strikingly intimate performances.
