Reinhard David Flender studied theology, piano, composition, and musicology in Hamburg, Münster, und Jerusalem. After winning the first prize in the piano competition "Jugend musiziert" in 1971, he began his studies in Hamburg in 1972. In 1977, he received a piano diploma from the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold.
