A durable, smart, and adaptable band, the Doobie Brothers managed to pull off the difficult task of being both a solid singles band and a band that turned out better than average albums. This five-disc set in the Rhino Flashback Original Album Series collects the Warner Bros. albums Toulouse Street (1972), The Captain and Me (1973), What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits (1974), Stampede (1975), and Takin' It to the Streets (1976) in a single package.

This expansive box set from Rhino features all nine of the Doobie Brothers' studio albums from their original 1970s Warner Bros. run plus their 1983 Farewell Tour live album. Beginning with their 1971 self-titled debut, when the band was fronted by founding singer/guitarist Tom Johnston, through 1980's Michael McDonald-led One Step Closer, it covers their two major eras as they slowly shifted from boogie rock bar band into the soulful soft rock giants of their later years. Hits like "China Grove," "Black Water," "Takin' It to the Streets," and "What a Fool Believes" are all here as well as their first live album, which mostly features their late-period lineup with the addition of a couple of special Johnston appearances that serve as an end cap to their career. Although the Doobies would reunite again in the late '80s, their original Warner Bros. years remain their best-known period.

With Black Label Society, guitarist and one-time Ozzy sideman Zakk Wylde found a lasting home for his ferocious metal picking. Formed in the late '90s, the outfit features a rotating lineup and Wylde taking on the bulk of the instruments. At its heart a Southern metal band, BLS melds the whiskey-soaked spirit of '70s rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd with the unleashed chaos of '80s thrashers such as Slayer…

More specifically, 24 CARAT includes the complete YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM album, plus the best cuts from LIFE AND TIMES and I GOT A NAME. Better yet, everything's been beautifully remastered in typical DCC fashion, which means that the lower frequencies seem more burnished than ever. The overall clarity is remarkable, and particularly works to the advantage of Croce's signature sound of two finger-picked acoustic guitars playing harmony lines.
