Chuck Berry fanatics, your ship has come in, and it’s the Queen Mary — or maybe we should call it the Queen Maybellene. As you’d expect from the Bear Family label, which specializes in gargantuan reissues, this 16-CD, 396-song box doesn’t simply span Berry’s career, it embraces virtually every musical note the man has ever issued. You’ll find all of his released album tracks and singles, starting with an obscure 1954 recording and including everything from the Chess, Mercury and Atco labels, plus every surviving alternate take. Also here are five CDs’ worth of concert performances from 1956 to 1972.

Is there any better story in music right now than Orville Peck's? He makes old-school country—often with high-drama elements—sung in a baritone so rich and deep that it's almost unsettling, and wears a fringed mask to conceal his true identity. (Internet sleuths believe he is Daniel Pitout, the out-and-proud drummer for Canadian punk band Nu Sensae, which only makes the story more intriguing.) On his second album, a follow-up to 2019's Pony, his voice somehow sounds even richer: more Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley than Chris Isaak, one of the comparisons that followed Peck last time around. Steered by country super-producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town), it's also a waaaay bigger, grander affair.

When Larry Williams picked up the banner so prematurely dropped by his Specialty label mate Little Richard in 1957, he became for a while the very personification of rock'n'roll. Frantic but always in control, wild but witty, crazy but cool, he had an unquenchable taste in bizarre women: short, fat, bony, dizzy or jelly bellied, Larry loved 'em all.

Universal's 2018 set The Studio Albums Vinyl Collection 1971-2016 isn't the first time the Rolling Stones] post-Decca catalog has been boxed up. Back in 2010, all the albums up to 2015 (which means it didn't include 2016's blues record Blue & Lonesome) were offered in a set that was a companion to the similarly limited-edition box The Rolling Stones 1964-1969. In a sense, the 2018 set functions as a cousin to ABKCO's The Rolling Stones in Mono – a 2016 box containing mono mixes of all the material the Stones officially released on Decca – but where that set was issued on both CD and LP, The Studio Albums Vinyl Collection 1971-2016 is, as its title suggests, explicitly designed as a vinyl package…

LOCKED AWAY MORE THAN 70 YEARS VANGUARD JAZZ FINALLY GETS A RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE
Our greatest pleasure at Mosaic comes in unearthing surprising alternate takes, forgotten sessions, and overlooked artists that may have inadvertently slipped into obscurity. Rarely do we get an even greater honor — presenting a treasure trove of recordings that have remained almost entirely unheard for many, many decades. We’ve worked years for the opportunity to re-visit the earliest jazz recordings on the Vanguard label, and we’re thrilled to finally present the first of what will be two Mosaic sets devoted to this important archive. A future set will focus on pianists in a variety of settings, but this first set showcases small groups in a 7-CD collection — “Classic Vanguard Small Group Swing Sessions.” The set includes highlights from the six-year effort — 1953-1958 — that was originally labeled the Vanguard Jazz Showcase series. This collection of 85 tracks represents Vanguard’s first forays into jazz and brings fresh life to the original LPs that were released some 70 years ago.
