This edition presents for the first time ever on CD, the Berlin performance by the 1969 Miles Davis Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Wayne Shorter left the band in the fall of 1969, and this quintet was to be soon replaced by new formations with even greater accents on percussion, fusion and funk. The band toured Europe from October 26 to November 9, 1969 after Miles Davis had recorded In A Silent Way. The Rome and Copenhagen performances by the same group can be found on a companion double CD set from the same label.

This edition presents the Rome and Copenhagen performances by the 1969 Miles Davis Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. The band toured Europe from October 26 to November 9, 1969. In his autobiography, Miles would state that this group was “really a bad motherfucker”.

Although chronologically the last to be issued, this collection includes some of the best performances from the tapes which would produce the albums Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and ultimately, Steamin'. A primary consideration of these fruitful sessions is the caliber of musicians – Miles Davis (trumpet), Red Garland (piano), John Coltrane (tenor sax), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) – who were basically doing their stage act in the studio…

By the time Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams recorded SORCERER in 1967, they were the most acclaimed ensemble in all of jazz. The Miles Davis Quintet had by this time perfected an intuitive style of collective improvisation that distilled the revolutionary changes of '60s jazz, but without rejecting elements of the mainstream tradition. In fact the Quintet's approach to melody, harmony and rhythm on SORCERER and NEFERTITI formed the basis for many of the Marsalis Brothers' popular recording projects of the 1980s.

The performance is rendered with a subtle grace, an excellent portrait of Miles at a pivotal point in his career, moving on from his early command of bop and explorations of the cool, but not yet exploding his sound altogether with the modal approach that he would soon adopt. Side one features "Concierto De Anranjuez", and side two features "Teo", 'Walkin" and "I Thought About You".
